College Football Rankings 2011: Who Got Screwed in the AP and Coaches' Polls?
With Week 1 of the college football season in the books, both the AP and Coaches' polls have been released.
A lot of the rankings are expected but there are also some shockers. There are some teams that deserve some respect but got snubbed from one of the polls or both.
We look at five teams that lost in either this week's AP Poll or Coaches' Poll.
Baylor Bears in the USA Today Poll
1 of 5One of the most surprising things in this week's AP Poll came after unranked Baylor beat the TCU Horned Frogs and jumped to No. 20. But ,when the USA Today Poll was released, Baylor was just snubbed for the team they had just beaten.
Baylor dominated the game from the very beginning and the score wouldn't have even been close if the Bears defense wanted to show up in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Robert Griffin and company destroyed that TCU defense and the 564 total yards prove it.
I don't understand how a team that gets destroyed is ahead of a team they just lost to. But, if the Bears continue to play like they did last week, not only will they shock some people in the Big 12, they'll crack the Top 25 in no time.
Auburn Tigers in the AP Poll
2 of 5Look, I'm shocked the Auburn Tigers needed a miracle to beat the Utah State Aggies as well.
Needing two touchdowns in the final two minutes to beat a team that finished 4-8 a year ago. I agree, it's bad.
But, they won.
It's not like they lost. So, to go from 23 to fall out of the AP Poll is a little crazy to me.
I understand this Auburn team is not the same from last year. This entire team is pretty much new faces and nobody expects them to come anywhere close to what they did last year.
But, I believe the close game against Utah State last week was a case of not being inspired to play against such a lousy team—not a lack of talent. Look at the numbers from the second half compared to the first. They scored four touchdowns in the second half compared to just two in the first. They also scored two in the final two minutes to win the game when even their fans had given up hope as they left the stadium.
A matchup against the Mississippi State Bulldogs next week will give us a better feel for this new Auburn team.
Georgia Bulldogs in Both Polls
3 of 5I've been bashing the Georgia Bulldogs as much as anybody the last week or two. But, to not have them in the Top 25 of any poll this week is a little bizarre. Especially when they were 19 in the AP Poll.
Auburn and USC received more votes than Georgia did in the AP Poll and in the Coaches' Poll, teams like South Florida, Iowa, and Utah got more votes than the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs were ranked higher than all of those teams mentioned just a week ago. So, not only did they fall out of the Top 25, they fell even further with other teams getting more votes than they did.
I don't know if that's because voters really believed the Bulldogs played that bad or if it's still a lack of respect for the Boise State Broncos.
The Bulldogs fell far considering they lost to the Broncos who were ranked fifth heading into the game and were considered the favorite by many to win.
A game against the South Carolina Gamecocks next week will give this team a chance to prove all the critics wrong.
Oregon Ducks in Both Polls
4 of 5Hopefully, this lovely cheerleader can help cheer you Ducks fans up.
Oregon fell hard in both polls, ten spots in the AP Poll and eleven spots in the coaches poll. That's quite a fall when you're talking about losing to the LSU Tigers who are Championship contenders and were ranked fourth in the country.
This drop is pretty much the same that the TCU Horned Frogs experienced this week, and they lost to an unranked team in the Baylor Bears. You can also make an argument that their loss was worse than the Ducks was. You never really felt that TCU had a chance to win that game with the way Robert Griffin was playing.
I believe the Ducks fell so far because of the sloppy play they showcased, racking up four turnovers and 12 penalties. But, that would be the Ducks beating themselves rather than the Tigers beating them. Unless you give the Tigers credit and say they forced those things. Well, in that case, the Ducks lost to a good team and shouldn't have fallen so far in the rankings.
The good news for Ducks fans is that the schedule is smooth sailing until November, which will give them a chance to climb their way back up.
South Florida Bulls in the USA Today Poll
5 of 5One of the most shocking upsets of the weekend was the South Florida Bulls going into South Bend and pretty much destroying the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
The Bulls went from unranked in the AP Poll to sitting at the No. 22 spot. The problem I have is that they are sitting outside of the USA today poll behind the Baylor Bears.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish played one of the sloppiest games of the weekend with five turnovers. But, they had over 500 total yards, so, they had more than enough chances to win the game. The Bulls didn't turn the ball over once and capitalized off of Note Dame's mistakes.
They played well and deserve some credit.
If the Arizona State Sun Devils can go from being unranked to being ranked for beating a UC Davis Aggies team, South Florida should be able to get some love as well.
