College Football Rankings: Nebraska Up to 10th in Both Polls

Chad RobbSep 6, 2011

After a 40-7 beating of Tennessee Chattanooga last Saturday the Cornhuskers moved up one spot to No. 10 in the USA Today poll while they remained in their 10th spot in the Associated Press Poll.

Does Nebraska deserve to be ranked in the top 10 in both polls? The final score means more to voters than what happens in the actual game. It would be impossible for each coach or member of the press to watch every college football game. When you look at the highlights from the game it looks like Nebraska had a dominating performance. In some sense of the word that would be true, but if you ask most Nebraska fans, more is expected of this team.

Nebraska played sloppy football against Chattanooga. This was one of the most anticipated games in a long time for Nebraska…new offense…new coaches…new players. What the fans were treated to was the same offense that fumbled the ball and was unable to get rolling like in the years past.

Oregon’s loss to LSU is the reason Nebraska was able to increase their position in the polls. Oregon sank like a rock, falling from third to fourteenth in the USA Today coaches poll and from third to thirteenth in the Associated Press poll.

Nebraska is still in a good spot in the polls. It is important that the Cornhuskers remain in the top 10. If Nebraska can continue to win they will climb in the polls as a result of some of the teams ahead of them playing each other. No. 1 Oklahoma plays No. 5 Florida State September 17th and No. 7 Texas A&M plays No. 9 Oklahoma State September 24th. As long as Nebraska continues to win the games which they are favored to win, the Cornhuskers will enter Big Ten play near the top five.

Nebraska plays Fresno State in Lincoln on Saturday. Most fans have already chalked this game up in the victory column for the Cornhuskers. The Bulldogs are coming to Lincoln to win this week and if they are overlooked, they just might.

Nebraska needs more consistent play offensively; continue their solid defense and special teams, and they will continue to climb in not only one poll, but both polls.

Nebraska is ranked 10th now. Where will they be after the game on Saturday against Fresno State?

Hopefully higher!
