Maryland Terrapins Football: See Why New Uniforms Still Have People Talking

Brandon GalvinSep 6, 2011

My mind is officially blown.

I don’t know whether to laugh, cry or smile at Maryland’s new football uniforms.

The Maryland Terrapins have set the world on fire with their new unis and everyone is still talking about them.

Whether you think they’re awesome or ugly, just remember—they’re 1-0 after Maryland’s boys took it to “The U.”

Forget Miami, we may have to start calling Maryland “The U,” with the “U” standing for “Uniform.”

These bad boys are the talk of the town and rightfully so. Even LeBron James chimed in on Twitter last night. What did our lord and savior, “King James,” have to say about them? You know you want to know what the end all and be all of opinion had to say.

If you missed the Monday night primetime showdown, we’re going to recap the uniforms in our own fashion version of “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.”

After dissecting the uniforms and fan reaction, we’ll see if these unis should stay for good or be abolished immediately.

Just don’t forget: 1-0.

The Good

1 of 4

The good, you ask? Maryland won the damn game, and that’s all that matters.

I don’t understand why everyone is freaking out about the uniforms—they’re different. They go against conventional wisdom with their contrasting colors and patterns, but everyone is talking about them. Any publicity is good publicity, right, Skip Bayless?

“These Maryland uniforms are shockingly hideous. But guarantee you, they'll be talked about on every show tomorrow. National pub for Terps,” Bayless said.

“Whatever you might think about Maryland's uniforms, they have 87 percent of my Twitter timeline talking Maryland Football,” said Marquette University’s Director of Marketing and Sales Brian Bowsher.

Maryland may be questioned for their controversial new threads, but they won the game. Maybe Miami was distracted by the new unis, but so be it. As long as the Terrapins win, Maryland fans won’t care.

“UMD can wear whatever uniforms they want if they keep playing football like this! RT @Maryland_Alumni Touchdown Maryland!” said CBS’s Christine Delargy.

As long as they win, they can wear whatever they want.

“Laugh all you want, but Maryland can pull these uniforms off because they're so good at football,” said SportsPickle.

The uniforms are visibly lighter than the previous ones. This will allow our college superstars to play to their skills. Our quarterbacks will enjoy a quicker release, our wide receivers will be able to extend their arms further, our running backs will hit the hole quicker and our defenders will attack ball carriers quicker.

If Maryland goes undefeated, you’ll see the public’s perception begin to shift. Winning is the cure to everything. Right now, Maryland is undefeated in their new unis.

The Bad

People don’t like change. We’re victims of habit, and whenever something out of the ordinary happens we generally reject it.

Maryland took the state flag and ran with it. The backlash has been outrageous. Fans are outraged, which could cost Maryland viewership and fans.

That certainly wasn’t the goal.

People do not like the contrasting colors and patterns, and don’t seem willing to come to the dark side. It was clearly too much for some people to handle.

“The Maryland football uniforms are an argument against Hi-Def TV,” said sports talk host Doug Rice.

Some people, jokingly, think the new-look unis could cause a backlash from the officials, too.

“The refs may hit these Maryland football players with unsportsmanlike conduct for wearing their new uniforms,” said InsideHoops.

Others think the new unis resemble something out of a video game.

“New Rule: Football uniforms should not look like they belong on the fake teams on Madden,” Jason Stanford said.

I wouldn’t go that far, but the flag pattern could affect people watching live and on television. We never want to take anything away from the game of football.

“If Georgia and Maryland aren't one-time-only uniforms and are starting a trend, I may have to stop watching college football,” said Jason Falls.

If people are going to be distracted, Maryland may have to make a change.

Then again, Oregon was never willing.

The Ugly

Publicity is great, but you’d rather it was good publicity.

You never want people calling for your job if you authorized the move to these controversial uniforms.

“Whoever designed those Maryland football uniforms needs to be hitting that #unemployment line,” said Some Guy (love that name).

Whoever designed the new unis thought they were paying homage to Maryland, but they didn’t realize the contrasting color scheme and pattern would cause such an uproar.

“Oh no. The Maryland state flag vomited all over the Terps' football uniforms,” said BeaconSEO’s Social Media Director Dale Blasingame.

“These Maryland uniforms look like someone took the ugliest flag in the nation and turned it into a football uniform,” said BlackenedOut.

One would think celebrities and athletes, generally known for wearing ridiculous outfits would appreciate the gaudy unis, but even they were disgusted. Our hero and known choke artist LeBron James was as stunned as we were by his NBA Finals disappearing act when he saw Maryland’s uniforms.

He was compelled to tweet, “OH GOSH! Maryland uniforms #Ewwwwww!”

Honestly, I didn’t know our King turned into an 11-year-old girl. I guess that’s what happens when Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks strip you of your manhood.

The statement that should hurt the most is that some think Maryland ruined college football’s opening weekend.

“Maryland s uniforms ruined a perfect end of the long weekend of college football. Georgia was awful. Maryland should go on NCAA probation,” said Chicago Bulls announcer Chuck Swirsky.

I wouldn’t go that far, especially since it was an exciting game to complete an amazing first week of college ball.

Verdict

So, what’s the big deal?

Maryland’s new unis—just remember, 1-0, baby—are part of the new-look, sleeker line of college football uniforms.

I’m a big fan of Boise State, Michigan, Georgia and, yes, Maryland’s new uniforms. Our gridiron warriors look cooler, faster and stronger.

They look like damn superheroes in their new uniforms. It’s like when the Power Rangers received their new ninja powers and uniforms—they were just better.

Low and behold, the Terrapins are already reaping the benefits after toppling Miami. They brought the thunder and the pain to the Hurricanes and ended the night in glory.

Maryland’s uniforms may be a bit over the top with the contrasting colors and patterns, but everyone is talking. The Terrapins have gained national media attention and the world is talking about them more than ever.

Whether you think the Terrapins’ unis distracted the Hurricanes is meaningless. If they did—good. The objective is to win and Maryland now sits 1-0 and will make a charge back into the top 25.

These bad boys are here to stay and hopefully the Terrapins can shut up the haters with an undefeated season. Maryland is back on the map and have officially made history courtesy of their controversial unis.

These new uniforms have my approval. Score!
