England vs. Wales: Preview, Team News and Prediction for Euro 2012 Qualifier

Will TideySep 6, 2011

England take on Wales at Wembley tonight in a Euro 2012 qualifier that could see Fabio Capello's team all but qualify for the finals in Ukraine and Poland next summer.

Team News and Predicted Lineups

England will be without injured trio Micah Richards, Leighton Baines and Darren Bent at Wembley. Fabio Capello has decided not to call up any replacements, however, and could well go with the same team that beat Bulgaria 3-0 on Friday night.

Wales, meanwhile, are without the suspended Craig Bellamy, who picked up a booking in the win against Montenegro. James Collins is back from suspension and Jack Collison returns after a stomach virus.

England (possible): Joe Hart, Chris Smalling, Gary Cahill, John Terry, Ashley Cole, Scott Parker, Gareth Barry, Theo Walcott, Ashley Young, Wayne Rooney

Wales (possible): Wayne Hennesey, Chris Gunter, Darcy Blake, James Collins, Neil Taylor, Aaron Ramsey, David Vaughan, Joe Ledley, Gareth Bale, Jack Collison, Steve Morison

Key Battles

Chris Smalling made an accomplished debut for England against Bulgaria, but he'll be up against a much more stern test in the form of Wales' Gareth Bale tonight. That said, Smalling dealt well with Bale when Manchester United beat Tottenham 3-0 at Old Trafford recently.

Another to watch is the clash between Norwich City striker Steve Morison and Gary Cahill. Morison is a real handful, and Cahill will need to be authoritative in all areas to nullify his threat.

Prediction

Wales will be competitive at Wembley, but ultimately, their squad is too weak to compete on level footing with Capello's England.

I predict an ultimately comfortable 3-0 win for the home side with Rooney once again among the goal scorers.
