College Football Rankings 2011: 3 Teams with No Shot at BCS Bowl Game

Ryan RudnanskySep 5, 2011

It only took one week of college football and already some questions have been answered.

The biggest question, of course, is, "Who will make a BCS bowl game?"

It's obvious that some of the borderline-top 25 teams won't make a BCS bowl, but there are a few that had a chance heading into Week 1 and simply laid a dud.

Here are three teams with no shot as a BCS bowl.

3. Ohio State Buckeyes

Yes, I know the Buckeyes lost Terrelle Pryor, as well as several of their core players for the first five games of the season, but I still feel like it needs to be said that the Buckeyes won't make a BCS bowl game this season. They're currently ranked No. 18 and disposed of Akron 42-0 on Saturday, but I think their losses are going to catch up to them when they face Miami and particularly No. 17 Michigan State.

I like senior Joe Bauserman at quarterback, who tossed three touchdowns on Saturday, but I think once he faces stiffer competition he's going to have trouble.

2. TCU Horned Frogs

The TCU Horned Frogs came into the 2011 season as a Boise State-like team, holding an incredible record the last three years, not to mention a Rose Bowl win against Wisconsin last season.

But it wasn't the quarterback situation that doomed the Horned Frogs after Andy Dalton's departure in Week 1. It was the defense. The Horned Frogs lost to Baylor 50-48 and spoiled a commendable performance from Casey Pachall, who threw four touchdowns.

TCU will have trouble getting into the BCS bowl picture with its latest loss. The fact it also doesn't look as good as last season forebodes a disappointment in 2011, as well.

1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

So much for the preseason hype. Ranked No. 16 in the AP preseason poll coming into the regular season, all the Fighting Irish did was lose their first game to the University of South Florida, 23-20. For a team boasting a solid defensive line and returning starting quarterback in Dayne Crist, the Fighting Irish managed just one sack and Crist was downright awful.

Notre Dame was gunning to rise back to prominence this season, but you would have expected its undoing to be against ranked teams, such as Michigan State, USC and Stanford, not South Florida. Its latest loss all but dooms the Irish in the BCS bowl picture unless they go on a similar run as Virginia Tech last season, which won its last 11 regular-season games.
