Boise State Broncos Football: After Week 1 Victory, Boise Deserves Respect
Every season the Boise State Broncos are considered a fraud. Playing in the weak Mountain West Conference (and before that the WAC), it's completely understandable, considering Boise and TCU are the only respectable teams in the conference.
Despite their 39-2 record over the course of the last four seasons, the number of quality opponents they play you could count on one hand.
Since Kellen Moore has been the starting quarterback in 2008, the Broncos have only lost two games. Pretty impressive, right?
But when you mention the majority of those wins came against teams like San Jose State, Louisiana Tech and Idaho, it doesn't mean as much.
Every season the Broncos are in the national championship conversation but are always denied because they can't be taken seriously with the lack of competition they play.
Over the last few seasons the Broncos have been the bully that claims they are the toughest guy in the world. The reality is they are only the toughest guy in their neighborhood.
Last night the Boise State Broncos went into the Georgia Bulldogs' backyard and left after knocking them out. It took a while for Boise to figure the Georgia defense out, but after four unanswered touchdowns, the Bulldogs were down for the count.
Boise entered the game with the much higher rank, but Georgia could have been considered the favorite. The Bulldogs are from the SEC and have the better overall talent, much stronger players and much faster athletes. The game was also played in the Georgia Dome, which isn't where the Bulldogs normally play but is still in the same state.
They finished the game with very similar stats, but Boise won the game by two touchdowns. The four unanswered touchdowns in about a 30-minute span became too much for the Bulldogs to handle.
You can say the Bulldogs are no longer a member of the SEC elite. They've lost 13 of their last 27 games and are returning very few starters from a year ago.
But the same people saying the win last night still doesn't convince them that Boise is a national contender are the same people that picked the Bulldogs to win the game. You can't play both sides of the fence.
I understand you don't like the fact that the Broncos could be in the national championship game. They aren't a traditional powerhouse, they play in Idaho and the field they play on is blue, of all colors.
But they're 62-5 in the last six seasons and do it with players of which only a few could actually make a roster in the SEC. They've had one of the best offenses and defenses in the country since 2008, as far as statistics are concerned.
With the schedule that lies ahead for the Broncos, they will probably finish the year undefeated and will once again be in the national championship conversation. It's going to be awfully hard to deny them.
Hopefully the Broncos are finally given the respect they deserve and are given the chance to prove the critics wrong. Again.
