College Football: Power Ranking the Top 50 Teams Now That We've Seen Them Play
Now that we are a week into the season the question is if we know more or less about the teams in the Top 25. While there were a couple of big time games, most of the top teams ended up playing against teams with much less talent.
During Week 1, you generally get a brief glimpse of a team's starters and a very limited view of the types of plays they are looking to run. Teams will water down their game plan and try not to show too much before getting into the heart of their schedule.
Despite the lack of marque matchups, here is a look at the Top 50 teams in the nation after one week of play.
No. 50: Miami
1 of 50Despite their opening week loss to Maryland, Miami still looked good enough to remain in the Top 50. The Hurricanes entered the game missing key players due to suspension and still were in the game until the final snap.
Things will not get easier for Miami as they need to start to get ready for their game against Ohio State this week.
No. 49: UCF
2 of 50UCF got their hits in this past weekend against Charleston Southern and ended the game with a 62-0 win. More impressive was the fact that UCF scored touchdowns on their first five drives and only gave up one first down the entire first half.
No. 48: Hawaii
3 of 50Before Colorado gets into Pac-12 play, they had too make a trip out to the island to play Hawaii, and the Warriors were ready.
Led by Bryan Moniz's three touchdowns, the Warriors beat Colorado 34-17.
No. 47: Arizona
4 of 50Nick Foles and Arizona had no issues this past week as they came out of the gates swinging. Arizona ended up beating Northern Arizona 41-10 and Foles stood out, throwing for 412 yards and five touchdowns.
No. 46: Cincinnati
5 of 50Zach Collaros and the Cincinnati Bearcats certainly did not struggle to put points up on the board as they defeated Austin Peay 72-10 this past week.
While the point total was impressive, we will learn more about them this week when they head on the road to take on Tennessee.
No. 45: Cal
6 of 50In their opening week game, Cal was facing off against Fresno State, a team that was looking for a statement win. Once the game was over, the team that had made the statement was Cal.
With a 36-21 victory, Cal showed that they may be on the right track to rebound from last season's struggles but a game in early October against Oregon will tell us more.
No. 44: Tennessee
7 of 50Tyler Bray seemed to pick up right where he left off last year as he tossed three touchdown passes and helped Tennessee defeat Montana, 42-16.
With a game against Cincinnati this week and Florida next week, it is imperative that the Vols take care of business out of conference if they hope to become bowl eligible.
No. 43: Pitt
8 of 50While Pitt did defeat Buffalo in the opening week of the season, it was not an impressive kick off to the season for the Panthers.
Ray Graham did rush for over 200 yards and three scores, but the Panthers will look for more out of their defense in the next couple of weeks.
No. 42: Maryland
9 of 50Despite how hard it may have been to look at their uniforms, Maryland had an impressive win on Monday night over Miami, 32-24.
In the game, Randy Edsall earned his first victory with the program and Danny O'Brien announced himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the conference.
No. 41: NC State
10 of 50Life without Russell Wilson got off to a good start for NC State as they defeated Liberty, 43-21.
Things get much more difficult for the Wolf Pack as they head on the road to take on Wake Forest this week.
No. 40: Air Force
11 of 50In the first week of the season, Air Force did what they were suppose to do and that is defeat South Dakota.
With a 37-20 victory, Air Force will now turn their attention to TCU as they look to make the Horned Frogs 0-2 after two games.
No. 39: Clemson
12 of 50Clemson got things started off on the right foot by earning a 43-19 victory over Troy in the first week of the season.
During their game, new starter Tajh Boyd ended up throwing for over 250 yards and three touchdowns and appears to have a firm grasp of the offense.
No. 38: Northwestern
13 of 50Before the game started, Dan Persa was announced as being out of the game and combine that with being on the road, Northwestern looked like a lock as a loss at Boston College.
After sixty minutes of football, the Wildcats showed why you play the game as they defeated the Eagles, 24-17.
No. 37: Texas Tech
14 of 50Texas State was the unfortunate team of a Texas Tech beat down as the Red Raiders won 50-10 in the opening week of the season.
Based on the schedule, it could be a few weeks before Texas Tech is challenged and we learned what they are capable of in 2011.
No. 36: North Carolina
15 of 50After firing Butch Davis right before the start of summer camp, the North Carolina Tar Heels helped start to put things behind them by defeating James Madison, 42-10.
It will be interesting to see how the Heels progress through the year without Davis on the sidelines.
No. 35: Syracuse
16 of 50Syracuse certainly had one of the most dramatic victories of the first week when they put together a fourth quarter comeback that finished with an overtime victory. The Orange defeated Wake Forest, 36-29, and are off to a great start.
No. 34: Utah
17 of 50After one week, Utah knows one thing and that is they must put together a better performance while in conference play. In their first game, the Utes won 27-10 and it will be interesting to see how they perform in their second game.
No. 33: Notre Dame
18 of 50All the talk and hype quickly came to an end in South Bend as the Irish lost their home opener to South Florida.
Not only has Notre Dame dropped their first game of the year, they are back to having a quarterback controversy.
No. 32: Texas
19 of 50The Texas Longhorns are looking to get things turned around quickly from last year and made a first step towards that with a 34-9 victory over Rice. We will know much more about the Longhorns next week when they take on BYU.
No. 31: Michigan
20 of 50Michigan played host to Western Michigan this past week and, for the first time in Wolverine history, the game was called due to weather in the third quarter.
Before the game was called, Michigan looked slightly improved but we will learn everything we need to know this week when the Irish come to the Big House.
No. 30: Houston
21 of 50One year after seeing his season cut short by an injury against UCLA, Houston quarterback Case Keenum came full circle and helped the Cougars earn a much needed 38-34 victory over those same Bruins.
No. 29: Georgia
22 of 50With a virtual home game against Boise State, the Bulldogs were unable to defeat the Broncos and dropped their season opener.
Georgia does not have time to feel bad for themselves as they play host to South Carolina this week. Another loss could truly derail their season and Mark Richt's coaching career.
No. 28: Auburn
23 of 50Despite pulling off a two-touchdown comeback in the final three minutes, Auburn clearly has some major question marks that they did not have to answer last season.
If Auburn plays the way that they did against Utah State in the SEC, they will be eaten up.
No. 27: TCU
24 of 50Coming into the 2011 season, many expected that the TCU Horned Frogs would miss Andy Dalton but the defense would keep them in games. After last Thursdays game, things could not have been more wrong. TCU ended up losing to Baylor 50-48 and have a lot more questions now.
No. 26: USC
25 of 50Last year, USC played a close game against Minnesota and it got even tighter this year as the Trojans squeezed out a 19-17 victory at home.
While the Trojans have the talent to play with anyone, they do not have the depth to put teams away early.
No. 25: Georgia Tech
26 of 50With a retooled triple option attack, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets came into 2011 with a level of uncertainty. With a 63-21 victory over Western Carolina, some of those answers have been found but things will become more interesting when they enter conference play.
No. 24: Michigan State
27 of 50While Michigan State is one of the better teams in the Big 10, they got off to a slow start this past week and were certainly not that impressive against Youngstown State.
The Spartans have another week to gear up and get ready for their game against Notre Dame, where we should learn more about them.
No. 23: Iowa
28 of 50Iowa's game against Tennessee Tech should have been another game that was claimed by the weather, but it only delayed the inevitable. The Hawkeyes finally did end up earning a 34-7 victory and have a game against Iowa State up next.
No. 22: Arizona State
29 of 50Aside from Stanford, Arizona State was another Pac-12 team that looked impressive in the opening week. The Sun Devils defeated UC Davis 48-14 and are gearing up for their game against Missouri this week.
No. 21: Penn State
30 of 50Penn State started the game with a 95-yard kickoff return and never looked back. The game ended with a 41-7 Penn State victory and earned them a spot in the Top 25 this week.
No. 20: Missouri
31 of 50In the first week of Missouri's season they were less then impressive but still managed to earn a 17-6 victory over Miami of Ohio. If the Tigers are hoping to be a factor in the Big 12, they will need to get up to speed quickly.
No. 19: South Florida
32 of 50All the talk around South Bend was about the Irish returning to a BCS bowl game. That talk quickly ended as BJ Daniels and the South Florida Bulls defeated Notre Dame in the season opener.
With the victory, South Florida should grab the attention of the Big East and is a great start to their 2011 season.
No. 18: Florida
33 of 50The 2011 Florida Gator season got off to a more impressive start this year then it did in 2010. The Gators looked efficient and it was clear that the new coaching staff will have a positive impact.
Both Chris Rainey and John Brantley looked good as the Gators beat Florida Atlantic, 41-3.
No. 17: West Virginia
34 of 50West Virginia was involved in another game that was brought to an end by the weather. The Mountaineers had opened up a 34-13 lead over Marshall when lightning brought the game to a final.
While West Virginia looked good, South Florida had the best week in the Big East.
No. 16: South Carolina
35 of 50South Carolina's season got off to an interesting start as Steve Spurrier decided to bench Stephen Garcia at quarterback. The decision was brief as Garcia got into the ballgame and helped South Carolina roll to a 56-37 victory over ECU.
The only question this season will once again be if the Gamecocks defense can carry their weight throughout the year.
No. 15: Ohio State
36 of 50On Saturday, people got to see Luke Fickell and the Ohio State Buckeyes quietly take care of business. The Buckeyes put together a very workman like performance and dominated Akron.
It will be interesting to see how this team continues to develop as they wait for key players to return from suspension.
No. 14: Mississippi State
37 of 50Dan Mullen had the Mississippi State Bulldogs turned around last year and appears to have them continuing on that same track this year.
The Bulldogs kicked off the 2011 season with an impressive 59-14 victory over Memphis.
No. 13: Arkansas
38 of 50Coming into the 2011 season, Arkansas would be without both Ryan Mallett and Knile Davis. The transition was smooth on Saturday as the Razorbacks dominated Missouri State, 51-7.
No. 12: Nebraska
39 of 50The Huskers had it on cruise control all day Saturday, earning a 40-7 victory over Chattanooga. Taylor Martinez rushed and threw for over 100 yards and accounted for three scores as both the offense and defense got off to a good start.
No. 11: Virginia Tech
40 of 50Frank Beamer and the Virginia Tech Hokies did exactly what they needed to do in the first week of the season and that was come out focused and not overlook their opponent. Virginia Tech did just that by beating Appalachian State, 66-13.
No. 10: Oregon
41 of 50Coming into the season the Ducks had two concerns, replacing three starters on the offensive line and their receiving group. After a game against LSU, those concerns have been confirmed.
The Ducks have a solid defense and an offense that will find its stride, but had too many questions to answer to take on LSU in the first game of the season.
No. 9: Oklahoma State
42 of 50Oklahoma State earned a victory in the first week of the season by defeating LA-Lafayette, 61-34. While the offense was impressive as usual, the defense left something to be desired and fans and pollsters will be looking for it to improve over the next few weeks.
No. 8: Wisconsin
43 of 50Wisconsin takes a jump because even though it was against UNLV, the Badgers looked as good as advertised in their opener.
While the Badgers were already strong defensively and have an outstanding rushing attack, Russell Wilson adds a new element to this attack that makes them very difficult to defend.
No. 7: Texas A&M
44 of 50In the opening week of the season, Texas A&M looked impressive and will be a welcome addition to whatever conference they decide to join. They earned a 46-14 victory over SMU and remain in the Top 10.
No. 6: Stanford
45 of 50Stanford got off to a strong start to 2011, earning a victory over San Jose State, 57-3, and setting the tone for the Pac-12.
Cardinal quarterback Andrew Luck looked sharp and barely had to break a sweat to get Stanford up early.
No. 5: Florida State
46 of 50Life without Christian Ponder got off to a good start as Florida State took care of business is their season opener and won, 34-0.
New quarterback EJ Manual will have another week to get comfortable in the Seminoles offense before the Oklahoma Sooners come to town.
No. 4: Boise State
47 of 50Kellen Moore and Boise State move up a spot as well this week and were extremely impressive in the victory over Georgia.
Every year Boise State looks to schedule a big time program and earn additional credibility to offset a weak conference schedule. This victory will once again spark debate across the nation throughout the year.
No. 3: LSU
48 of 50The LSU Tigers were extremely impressive in their opening week game against Oregon and have earned the No. 3 spot.
Much like Alabama, the Tigers will have plenty of opportunities in conference play to earn a spot in the national championship.
No. 2: Alabama
49 of 50Like other big programs, Alabama did not face a huge test in their opening week game. The Crimson Tide took care of business but certainly were not in the position to pass the Sooners in the rankings.
Once Bama enters conference play, they will have plenty of opportunities to make their mark.
No. 1: Oklahoma
50 of 50In the opening week of the season, Oklahoma did nothing to hurt their No. 1 ranking. The offense came out and put up 47 points and the defense held Tulsa to 14.
The victory over Tulsa was very workman like and the Sooners are starting to gear up towards a road game against Florida State.
