Mississippi Offense vs. BYU Defense
5 of 7Ole Miss Offense
The Ole Miss offense has a lot of returning talent but not as much at the skill positions.
Quarterback Barry Brunetti transferred from West Virginia, so the likely leader of this unit is senior running back Brandon Bolden.
Bolden was the driving force behind the nation’s 18th-best rushing game in 2010, and gained 228 yards on the ground against Fresno State last season.
Their entire offensive line comes back, including preseason all-SEC left tackle Bradley Sowell.
BYU Defense
The BYU defense was the reason why the Cougars won seven games in 2010. In every victory, they allowed fewer than 24 points.
The bulk of the starters are gone from that unit, though, and in every loss except a one-point loss to Utah, opponents scored 27 or more points.
BYU Offense vs. Mississippi Defense
6 of 7BYU Offense
The Cougars’ offense didn’t function that well in Jake Heaps' first season as a starter, but with every person returning from that unit except for the right guard, things should be looking up in 2011.
JJ Di Luigi burst onto the scene last year with just under 1,000 yards, including a 139-yard performance against San Diego State.
Ole Miss Defense
Mississippi’s defense left a lot to be desired last season, especially in SEC play and against the pass. They allowed an average of 35 points per game and 37 against conference opponents.
There are only four returning starters listed as starting this game, and the front seven only has two players returning.
Injury Report
7 of 7BYU has had a relatively injury-free offseason until it was reported recently that back-up tight end Devin Mahina fractured his neck.
This is one of the most serious injuries a player can endure, but thankfully it appears that he will be okay.
Mississippi will be without starting defensive end D.T. Shackelford as he recovers from an ACL tear.
