Utes Kickoff with Victory: 4 Players Who Shined in Season Debut

Alex ShoemakerSep 1, 2011

It’s official…the Utah Utes have their first victory as a member of the Pac-12 conference.

The Utes were all over the Montana State Bobcats, coming away with a 27-10 victory on Thursday.

At one point the Utes were ahead 24-0, and it was soon after that the subs began to see the field.

To recap the game, here are some of the guys who shined for the Utes today.

Jordan Wynn

1 of 4

It was good seeing Jordan Wynn with the football in his hands. It’s well known that Wynn is one of the better quarterbacks in the Pac-12, and he had another stellar game for the Utes.

Against the Bobcats, Wynn completed 15-of-23 passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns. Wynn read routes well all game and did not throw an interception or make any major mistakes.

Wynn was sacked several times, but a lot of that blame goes to poor blocking by the offensive line.

It’s clear Wynn will carry his momentum built from last season.

John White IV

2 of 4

The Utes running back by committee approach was on full display against the Bobcats.

The game MVP in my opinion should go to John White IV (at least the offensive MVP).

On the day, White rushed for 150 yards on 19 carries with a touchdown on the ground.

White also caught a 5-yard pass for touchdown.

White definitely helped get him some distance on the Utes running back depth chart.

Coleman Peterson

3 of 4

It’s time to give a little love to the kicker.

Coleman Peterson converted both of his field goal attempts, long of 44 yards, and came through on all three of his extra point attempts.

Peterson accounted for nine points against the Bobcats, third most on the team.

Having a great offense and defense is obviously very important, but don’t overlook how important it is to have security in special teams.

Peterson is a darn good kicker and an asset to have in your arsenal

Brian Blechen

4 of 4

After a freshman All-American year by Brian Blechen in 2010, he doesn’t appear to be slowing down. Blechen made the transition from safety to linebacker, and it appears seamless.

On the day, Blechen had two interceptions for 60 yards and almost broke one out for a touchdown.

The secondary as a whole had a decent day, allowing 183 yards through the air with most of those coming against the reserves.
