Looking at Each AP Top 5 Team's Toughest Game
Now that the AP has released a top five consisting of Boise State, LSU, Oregon, Alabama and Oklahoma, people have begun to make predictions on which of those teams has the best chance of going undefeated.
Obviously, it is extremely tough to go undefeated, and there's a good chance that none of these five teams finishes the year without a loss.
Here's a look at each of these teams' toughest game for the upcoming season.
5. Boise State (vs. Georgia, Sep. 3)
1 of 5Boise State will get their toughest game of the year out of the way in Week 1, when they face Georgia. The game technically won't be played on Georgia's home field, but instead at the Georgia Dome.
If Boise State can win this game, they will have a great chance of going undefeated. Their next toughest game would appear to be either TCU at home on Nov. 12, or on the road at Fresno State on Oct. 7.
If the Broncos are able to beat Georgia and go undefeated, though, it still might not be enough to make the voters vote them into the national title game.
Beating Georgia would certainly be an impressive win, but it may not impress the voters enough seeing as how the Bulldogs aren't one of the two or three best teams in the SEC.
Boise would almost have to blow out teams like Georgia, Fresno State, TCU and Nevada if they want a shot at the national championship.
The chances that they blow out Georgia are very unlikely. Even though Boise State's defense is very good, it will still be hard to slow down Georgia's offense. The passing game will be fine without A.J. Green, as Tavarres King, Marlon Brown and Rantavious Wooten are just waiting to emerge.
Even though Isaiah Crowell will only be a true freshman, expect him to have plenty of success running the ball.
The key to this game will probably be how well Georgia's defense plays. Nobody expects them to stop Kellen Moore and Doug Martin, but they need to at least be able to slow them down.
This game will be, without a doubt, Boise State's toughest test of the year.
4. LSU (at Alabama, Nov. 5)
2 of 5LSU's schedule is absolutely brutal this year, and this game looks to be the toughest of them all. This game will probably mean a lot more to Alabama than it will to LSU, as LSU could realistically enter play with one or two losses.
Most analysts are hyping this game as the best game of the 2011 college football season, but that seems to be a bit of a stretch.
With the recent suspensions of Jordan Jefferson and Russell Shepard, a lot of the buzz that was surrounding LSU this season is beginning to disappear. A lot of people are questioning if they even deserve to be ranked in the Top 5 anymore.
Honestly, it would be somewhat surprising if LSU won this game. Because it's played in Alabama, and because of what happened last year when the two teams met, Nick Saban isn't going to lose this game. Plus, Alabama is a lot more talented, especially on offense.
The glaring problems at quarterback and potentially even wide receiver for LSU make Alabama the easy favorite in this one.
3. Oregon (at Stanford, Nov. 12)
3 of 5If Jordan Jefferson was starting at quarterback, then the LSU matchup would be Oregon's toughest challenge of the year. But he's not, and Oregon's chances just got a whole lot better in that game.
The road trip to Stanford now appears to be the toughest test.
Everybody remembers last year's meeting between these two, when Stanford jumped out to a 21-3 lead, but ended up losing 52-31.
We probably won't see the same kind of offensive explosion this year. Stanford will be a different team without Jim Harbaugh, but should still be solid.
Oregon has a tough test the week before when they travel to Washington, so they could potentially be coming off a loss.
Both teams will probably have similar records coming in (one or two losses), so this game could end up deciding the Pac-12 North.
2. Alabama (LSU, Nov. 5)
4 of 5As mentioned earlier, this is LSU's toughest game of the year, but it's Alabama's toughest as well. When looking at Alabama's schedule, it sets up favorably for them to go undefeated.
They have three tough road games at Penn State, Florida and Mississippi State, but all of those are very winnable. The trip to Auburn to end the year isn't a given win, mainly because it's a rivalry game.
Even though this LSU game is probably Alabama's toughest of the year, expect them to win it. LSU will probably have problems scoring in this game, and Alabama will put up just enough points to win.
The storylines could change, though, depending on what happens with some of LSU's suspended players.
If Alabama can win this one and the tough road games at Mississippi State and Florida, look for them to go undefeated.
1. Oklahoma (at Oklahoma State, Dec. 3)
5 of 5Most people would probably list the matchup with Florida State as Oklahoma's toughest game, but I think the Seminoles are slightly overrated and won't be as good as people think.
In that case, the showdown with Oklahoma State to end the season looks like it is Oklahoma's toughest game of the year.
There is a great chance that the Sooners come into this game undefeated, and Oklahoma State would like nothing more than to beat them and possibly knock them out of the national championship.
Even though the Cowboys have actually had some very good teams over the past several years, they just haven't been able to get over the hump and beat Oklahoma. It will be interesting to see if this is the year they finally do it.
Oklahoma will certainly be able to score in this game, so the key will be how well their defense plays. It just doesn't look like they'll be able to slow Oklahoma State down.
The Cowboys are solid at quarterback with Brandon Weeden, and are extremely underrated at running back with Joseph Randle and Jeremy Smith. They are absolutely loaded at receiver with Josh Cooper, Hubert Anyiam and of course Justin Blackmon, the best receiver in the country.
Their offensive line is also very solid, with four very good starters. The only thing that may affect Oklahoma State's offense this year is the loss of Dana Holgorsen. His absence could either have a huge impact, or not much of one at all.
Look for this game to be Oklahoma's toughest test of the year.
