Liverpool Transfer Rumors: Five Players Who Could Sign Late on Deadline Day
The deadline day is upon us, and the most exciting off-the-field day in English football is sure to bring surprises this year as well.
Though Liverpool is not renowned for last-minute deals, we can still expect deals to go through on the last day.
With all the additional spending power that Liverpool seem to have, one does not rule out Liverpool making a couple of moves before the clock strikes 11 today.
Furthermore, with the imminent departure of David N'Gog, the signing of a back-up striker is not too far fetched.
This, coupled with Liverpool's continuing resolve to strengthen their already strong midfield, could lead to this transfer day deadline being an interesting one for Liverpool fans.
Craig Bellamy
1 of 5The 31-year old Welsh striker from Manchester City has fallen down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium, more so since the arrival of strikers like Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko in January and Sergio Aguero earlier this month.
He is also said to have fallen out with the manager Roberto Mancini and would definitely look for a move to get some playing time.
With Liverpool agreeing for a deal to move David N'Gog to Bolton, Liverpool are in need of a back-up striker, and Craig Bellamy would definitely fit the bill.
With his age, he would be the perfect foil for a couple of years before the youngsters like Adam Morgan and Raheem Sterling start knocking on the door.
Though he has also been linked with the likes of Stoke City and Queens park Rangers, Liverpool is said to be his first choice.
The only roadblock that seems to be remaining is the deal structure—loan move or a free transfer along with an impasse on the player's wages.
Chances: 8/10
Daniel Sturridge
2 of 5Daniel Sturridge has been a long-term target for the Reds.
Liverpool are also in need of reinforcements in the striker department, and they would prefer to have someone like Daniel Sturridge, who is young and is willing to wait to improve and make his way into the team.
At just 22-years-old, he impressed in the loan spell at Bolton last year and would also fit the buy-young policy of the owners at Liverpool.
In case Chelsea make any move for Raul Meireles, Liverpool probably would make sure that Daniel Sturridge is included as a part of the deal in a player-plus-cash offer.
Chances: 7/10
Yossi Benayoun
3 of 5The Israeli international had spent four seasons with Liverpool before making a move to Stamford Bridge last season.
However, the opportunities at Chelsea have been very limited for the 31-year old, and he is reconsidering his future at the club.
Some of the top clubs like Arsenal and Tottenham are also said to be interested in the player.
However, his past relations with the club along with Kenny Dalglish's playing style would make Benayoun the perfect fit at Liverpool.
However, whether Liverpool would spend money on another attacking midfielder or not is something that needs to be answered.
He was included in the offer for Raul Meireles by Chelsea in a player-plus-cash offer that was rejected, but a standalone deal cannot be ruled out completely.
Chances: 5/10
Ibrahim Afellay
4 of 5Though not in the news currently, one should not rule out Liverpool making a last minute approach for the 25-year-old from Barcelona.
With the continuing signings at Barcelona, opportunities for Afellay seem to be limited at Camp Nou, and he will certainly be reconsidering his future.
He had been linked with a move to Liverpool before he sealed a move to Barcelona in January, but Liverpool's admiration for the Dutch international seems to have persisted.
With the way the Reds have gone about their business in this transfer window, a late bid for Afellay should not come as too much of a surprise.
Chances: 4/10
James Milner
5 of 5The most unlikely of the list, James Milner was not even linked with a move to Anfield until this morning.
Twitter rumors started appearing this morning about Milner leaving the English camp for a medical at Liverpool.
Milner seems to be in the scheme of things at Manchester City. However, the return of Nigel De Jong from his injury coupled with the signing of Samir Nasri might limit his playing time at the club. There just may be a possibility that he might want to move to get regular playing time.
Even though Liverpool seem to be amply covered in the department, there has been an obvious bias at the club for players with Premier League experience. Milner is English as well, which would further make sense for the Reds.
Chances: 3/10
