College Football 2011: 5 First-Year Head Coaches Already on the Hot Seat
24 schools have new head coaches and believe it or not, a few of them are already on the proverbial coaching hot seat.
Some are on there for reasons beyond their control, while the actions of at least one newcomer has him already a marked man.
Here are five new coaches who are already on the hot seat.
Luke Fickell
1 of 5Luke Fickell was rushed into the Ohio State head coaching job after the dismissal of Jim Tressel. The 2011 season will serve as his audition for the permanent head coaching job, which the school has said will be reopened once the season concludes. It's basically an interim position—unless Fickell works some magic.
Obviously, those are not fair conditions for Fickell, but the school will be looking for a big name coach to replace him if the Buckeyes do not play well.
Dana Holgorsen
2 of 5West Virginia coach Holgorsen made negative headlines after he was booted from a Charleston casino for drunk and disorderly behavior. Furthermore, it was reported in the Times West Virginian that Holgorsen has already had multiple alcohol-related incidents since arriving in Morgantown.
If Holgorsen finds himself in the news for the wrong reasons again (which is certainly possible), don't expect him to be around for much longer.
Everett Withers
3 of 5Like Fickell, North Carolina coach Everett Withers was also abruptly rushed into the head coaching job after the firing of Butch Davis.
The school spent the last two years of the Davis regime in the NCAA's crosshairs. UNC may decide to cut all remaining ties with the former coach by season's end. Unfortunately, that includes Withers.
David Shaw
4 of 5Stanford coach David Shaw has the unenviable task of replacing Jim Harbaugh, who departed for the NFL after resurrecting the school's dormant football program.
His seat probably is not as hot as some of the other coaches, but the one thing working against him is that Stanford now has expectations. And if he cannot deliver, especially with senior quarterback Andrew Luck, he might not be the Cardinal coach for long.
He's going to need a lot of luck to make it past this season.
Will Muschamp
5 of 5Will Muschamp was supposed to take over at Texas for Mack Brown when he retired. But that changed when Florida hired him to take over for Urban Meyer.
Muschamp's seat is barely at room temperature, and the reviews from the majority of the Gators players have been positive.
However, do not think the school has forgotten about the Ron Zook era, which began with the abrupt departure of legendary coach Steve Spurrier. Like Muschamp, Zook had no head coaching experience prior to taking over the Gators. Zook lasted only three seasons in Gainesville after failing to capitalize on his excellent recruiting classes. Muschamp could face a similar fate if he does not win quickly.
