Texas A&M to SEC: The Aggies Leaping off a Cliff Without Thinking It Through?

Randy ChambersJun 1, 2018

Are the Texas A&M Aggies sure they want to do this?

They should really think twice before they make their reported jump to the SEC. The grass is not always greener on the other side.

After a 15-year marriage, the Aggies want a divorce, but there are different reports floating around on the Internet about whether it's true or not.

Some reports say Texas A&M handed in its letter of withdrawal, while a Texas A&M spokesman has denied that the letter was sent.

The Aggies can deny all they want, but the whole college football world knows they are trying to cheat on the Big 12 with the SEC. In any case, A&M formally notified the Big 12 last week that it was reviewing the possibility, and the school is not denying its interest.

We understand you're trying to take the spotlight off the school by denying any involvement, but it's not going to work. You asked for it; this is what you get.

Be careful what you wish for.

Leaving will seemingly cost the school somewhere around $2 million annually because they'd be breaking a contract they signed last year with the Big 12 and Fox Sports while replacing it with about $18 million from the SEC, according to figures from The Dallas Morning News and The New York Times. Further, The Times reports that A&M "also has to deal with a potentially significant buyout that will be in the neighborhood of $15 million."

That's a pretty penny to give up for a school that is leaving in hopes of prettier ones.

Texas A&M is also crying because it's the little brother to Texas—always outshone by the big school, A&M never gets any respect or exposure.

Well, welcome to the SEC, where there are eight teams in the AP Top 25 Poll. This is the best conference in college football, and it's loaded with talent. This is a conference where some teams can't lose more than three games or it's considered a disappointment.

The SEC isn't like the Big 12, where there are only a couple of good teams and the rest are what they serve at little kids' birthday parties.

The SEC dominates the college football world, and if you're not built to hang with the big boys, it will chew you up and spit you out.

If you're not built for it, the best move you could make is to stay in your own conference.

Are the Aggies built for it? Only time will tell. But it will not be any easier joining the SEC.
