Real Madrid vs. Zaragoza: Ranking the Madrid Players

Mohamed Al-HendyJun 1, 2018

This past Sunday, Los Blancos absolutely annihilated a helpless Zaragoza side 6-0, capturing the biggest margin of victory of the La Liga weekend and making their intentions to dominate the league and reclaim the title from Barcelona known.

Here, we will take a look at the performance of each individual Real Madrid player involved in the game, and assign a rating to each player.

GK: Iker Casillas - 7.0

In a game entirely dominated by Real Madrid, Zaragoza took only three shots, only one of which was on target, giving Iker Casillas practically nothing to do. Easy clean sheet for the Spanish goalkeeper.

LB: Marcelo - 8.0

Typical robust performance from the Brazilian wing-back. Marcelo was constantly involved in the attack down the left wing, and was in the right place to score Real Madrid's second goal.

RB: Sergio Ramos - 7.0

Did not shine as bright as his counterpart in the left back position, but was untroubled defensively and delivered the cross that lead to Marcelo's goal.

CB: Pepe - 7.0

Like most of the other Real Madrid defenders in this match, Pepe had little to do or deal with in this match against Zaragoza, but still broke up play when he needed to.

CB: Ricardo Carvalho - 7.0

Quiet game on the defensive end in a game where little defense was needed, but was able to get himself involved in the team's offense and almost helped Mesut Ozil open the scoring in the 13th minute.

DM: Fabio Coentrao - 7.0

Starting in the position he played in for most of preseason and looked most comfortable in in the Spanish Supercup, Coentrao put in another energetic display alongside Xabi Alonso as a defensive midfielder. Nothing spectacular from the Portuguese international, but an all-around good performance.

HM: Xabi Alonso - 7.5

Xabi Alonso regularly flourishes in these games, and against the inferior midfielders of Zaragoza, Alonso was able to keep things fluid and ticking in midfield. Chipped in with a goal to put Real Madrid up 3-0 and effectively end the game.

RW: Angel Di Maria - 7.5

After a couple of poor performances in the Spanish Supercopa, Angel Di Maria showed his importance to the Real Madrid team with a tireless performance. Assisted Madrid's fourth goal immediately before being subbed off.

Typical clinical finishing from Ronaldo, scoring a hat-trick off two tap ins and a defense-splitting pass from Mesut Ozil. Always made himself available to finish off his team's attacking play, and created opportunities for his teammates on occasions as well.

AM: Mesut Ozil - 7.5

Beautiful pass to split the defense for Real Madrid's first goal, and was involved in his team's offense throughout the game, before being subbed off for Kaka in the 78th minute.

CF: Karim Benzema - 7.0

A performance that almost perfectly mirrored his two Spanish Supercopa performances. Very hardworking performance for Benzema, and he was involved in most of his team's attacking play while on the pitch, but simply could not get himself on the scoresheet.

Substitutes

AM: Kaka - 8.0

Came on when the game was done and dusted, but gave an excellent account of himself by grabbing a goal and recording an assist in 12 short minutes on the pitch.

CF: Gonzalo Higuain - 6.0

Though he didn't have to, Higuain didn't really do much for Real Madrid's offense in the last 15 minutes of the game. He had a chance to score or create an easy assist, but failed to do either with a chip that did not trouble the Zaragoza keeper, Roberto.

RW: Jose Callejon - 6.5

Given the most playing time of any of the three substitutes, Jose Callejon was lively and had a close range effort saved by Roberto.
