Bobby Petrino Takes Ironic Jab at Big Ten

Randy ChambersMay 31, 2018

Arkansas Razorbacks head coach Bobby Petrino has opened up a can of worms by having some fun at the expense of the Big Ten conference.

Petrino was asked what the blueprint was for the Razorbacks to win their first championship since 1964.

"We need to get to Atlanta and win the SEC championship game," he said. And then history shows that you go to a national championship bowl game and draw one of those slow schools from the north and you beat them."

Looking at this comment, it doesn't really mean much because look who it's coming from. Petrino has won 60 percent of his games while coaching at Arkansas. He made a BCS bowl game for the first time last season and who did he lose to? You guessed it. A Big Ten team.

In fact Ohio State dominated Arkansas until Ryan Mallett tried to make a comeback late in the second half, but it was too late.

Petrino is using the success of other SEC teams and trying to make his program look good.

Yes, the SEC has won the last five national championships in a row, and seven of the last eight, but what have you done?

You can't take credit for the things other teams did in your conference just because you happen to play with them.

According to the College Football Data Warehouse, Arkansas is 1-6 all-time against Big Ten opponents. It also says the Big Ten is 98-95-7 all-time against the SEC. That's a winning record. Other than independents, the Big Ten is the only conference to have a winning record against SEC teams.

Uh, Petrino, you're falling behind.

Heading into this season, the Big Ten has four teams in the AP Poll compared to the SEC who has eight. No question the SEC is a much deeper conference, but Petrino has no room to gloat.

He needs to be focusing on how to replace Ryan Mallet and how to avoid dropping out of the Top 25 when his team plays three consecutive games against Alabama, Texas A&M and Auburn.

The SEC has dominated college football over the last decade, but neither Bobby Petrino or Arkansas had anything to do with it.

It would have been better if Urban Meyer had said this while he was still coaching Florida, or maybe Nick Saban at Alabama.

But they don't have to. They win and let majority of the talking take place on the field instead.

Maybe Petrino should take a page out of their book and do the same thing.
