College Football 2011: Who Will Win the Championship, the Heisman and More?
The college football season kicks off in less than a week, Thursday to be exact.
There are always a lot of questions heading into the season. Which team will be good? Which team will go through a slump? But some questions are always bigger than others.
Questions like who will win the Heisman trophy or the National Championship are always on the mind before the season starts. Everybody loves to make predictions.
Here are five questions everyone would like to know the answer to heading into the 2011 college football season.
Which Coach from a Major Program Will Be Fired First?
1 of 5Is there really any coach on a hotter seat entering the season than Georgia Bulldogs coach Mark Richt?
Richt has had a lot of success at Georgia, but 12 combined losses in the last two seasons isn't going to keep you around long in the SEC. The seven losses the Bulldogs suffered last season was the most for the program since 1990.
Georgia has a great quarterback in Aaron Murray, but lack of quality receivers may be a problem. It also doesn't help when you have a revamped offensive line that may struggle to open up running lanes for the running backs.
On defense the Bulldogs only return five starters from a year ago, including one out of the starting four linebackers. The defensive line should be improved, as well as the secondary, but the youth at the linebacker position will not help this defense at all.
Neither will the schedule, as the Bulldogs open up the season with games against Boise State and South Carolina. There is a good possibility this team starts the year off with an 0-2 record. The schedule also includes Mississippi State, Tennessee, Florida, Auburn and a trip to Georgia Tech.
Richt is already on a short leash, and if the Bulldogs start the year off 0-2, things may get ugly in Georgia.
Which Preseason Top 10 Teams Won't Be Ranked When Season Ends?
2 of 5The only reason LSU's picture is there is because if it's going to be any team, it'll be them.
But the right answer is none.
Oklahoma and Alabama both have the talent and the coaching to stay atop the rankings all season long and contend for a National Championship.
The Oregon Ducks have more than enough offense to outscore the majority of the teams they play, and that alone will result in a lot of wins.
Florida State is one of the most balanced teams in the country as well as Texas A&M and Wisconsin. All three teams should be great this season.
Stanford won't lose many games with the best quarterback in the nation Andrew Luck leading the way.
Boise State has the leadership, offense, defense and the schedule to go undefeated and find themselves in a BCS bowl. They'll lose two games at the most.
The only team left is the LSU Tigers and although this team is filled with talent, the recent drama surrounding the team may prove to be a huge distraction. With Jordan Jefferson arrested and one of the team's main receivers declared ineligible, it may eventually catch up to them.
The Tigers' schedule doesn't help either with games against Oregon, Mississippi State, West Virginia, Florida, Auburn, Alabama, and Arkansas.
They may be able to survive the season or this nightmare could last for another few months. We shall find out soon.
How Many Teams Will Go Undefeated?
3 of 5The answer is two.
Both the Oregon Ducks and the Boise State Broncos will go undefeated this season.
Boise State has the experience to avoid another letdown like last year against Nevada. The majority of their players are either juniors or seniors, including 14 returning starters from a year ago. They have the players and the schedule to pull this off.
If they can avoid a loss against the Georgia Bulldogs on opening weekend, the only other real test would come against TCU, and that's at Boise. Overall this team is too talented and experienced to lose a game this season.
The Oregon Ducks lost the Championship game a season ago, so, they have unfinished business this season. Returning 12 starters from last season, including seven on offense, this team can run with anybody in the country.
Sure, there are some question marks on defense, but when you average 47 points per game, you only need a couple stops to win games.
The schedule doesn't get difficult until November with games against Washington, Stanford, USC and Oregon State, but they are all teams the Ducks should beat in close games.
The Boise State Broncos will return to a BCS bowl game, and the Oregon Ducks will return to the BCS Championship game.
Who Will Win the Heisman Trophy?
4 of 5Landry Jones may not be as talented as Stanford's Andrew Luck, but he definitely has more weapons on his team. Jones is throwing to arguably the best receiving corps in college football, including one of the best wide receivers in Ryan Broyles.
Jones had off-the-chart numbers last season, including 4,718 passing yards and 38 passing touchdowns. If his numbers are anywhere near that this season, it'd be really hard to deny him the Heisman Trophy.
Oklahoma is also a legitimate National Championship contender this season, which also doesn't hurt. With all the receivers Jones has to throw to, he could become the sixth Sooner in history to win the award, and the second in three years.
Who Will Become the BCS National Champions?
5 of 5It was already predicted that the Oregon Ducks will go undefeated this season. So, with that in mind, there is no question that they end up in the BCS National Championship for the second season in a row.
But this time, they will win it.
This team had the No. 1 offense in the country last season, averaging 47 points per game. They return seven starters from that unit including two Heisman candidates in quarterback Darron Thomas and running back LaMichael James. You can bet this offense will not lose a step from a year ago and will be able to score with any team in the country.
The defense lost six starters, and there are questions on the defensive line as well as with the linebackers. But defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti always puts together aggressive units, and this defense should be no different. The secondary is full of playmakers and ball hawks that should be able to fill in the holes that the rest of the defense has.
The experience from last year will also help this team overcome any obstacles that a younger team would have issues with.
Your 2011 BCS National Champions will be the Oregon Ducks.
