English Premier League Power Rankings Week 3: United Back on Top

Joe TanseyJun 7, 2018

What a week in the Premier League we have just seen.

The two Manchester clubs destroyed both North London clubs by a combined score of 13-3.

Also, around the league, Chelsea and Liverpool continued their consistent starts.

There was one nervous moment around England this weekend, and that came when Didier Drogba went unconscious on the pitch. All signs point to the Ivorian being OK, but the concern for his health is held by all Premier League fans.

As always, last week's ranking will be in parenthesis.

20. Arsenal (11)

1 of 20

Arsenal put on a display of disappointing play and let Manchester United run all over them at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The scoreboard read 8-2, and as the losing side, Arsenal are not only humiliated but now realize more than ever that they must make additions to the squad to contend for European competition.

Another black eye on Arsenal's resume is that the club has not finished a league game this season with all 11 players on the pitch. Carl Jenkinson became the third victim, as he picked up a second yellow card to send him off in the second half.

19. Blackburn (20)

2 of 20

Not one, but two missed penalties by Blackburn this week, and that sums up their season so far.

Sitting in 19th place in the table with no points and owners who are very picky about spending their money on new players, Blackburn are destined for relegation right now.

18. Tottenham (12)

3 of 20

Fans thought that Tottenham's brutal beating at the hands of Manchester City was bad, until they saw how bad Arsenal lost and Spurs fans felt a little better, until they realized their club is in dead last with no points and a minus seven goal differential out of two games.

The good news is Emmannuel Adebayor is now on loan from Man City, and Scott Parker may be on the way in to replace Luka Modric, but that is strictly rumors at this point.

17. West Brom (19)

4 of 20

West Brom could not pick up their first point of the season, as they were robbed of a point late in their match with Stoke.

In an uneventful game, the Baggies managed only four shots on goal and the club is left alongside Blackburn and Tottenham as the three teams yet to manage a point.

16. Swansea (18)

5 of 20

Swansea continued to defend the Liberty Stadium like a fortress as they held Sunderland goal-less on Saturday.

But, for the second straight match, the Swans were unable to score as well and ended in a goal-less draw with their opponents.

15. Norwich (16)

6 of 20

The Canaries' trip to Stamford Bridge looked to be a successful one after Grant Holt scored a 63rd minute equalizer.

That success was unable to be attained by Paul Lambert's club after they gave up two goals in the last 10 minutes to fall to Chelsea.

Norwich get a visit from West Brom after the international break on September 11.

14. Queens Park Rangers (13)

7 of 20

After an impressive road win at Everton last week, QPR followed that result up in the worst way possible, as they lost at Wigan by a 2-0 scoreline.

Their will be help coming for the London club, as Joey Barton and Luke Young have already been brought in this week, while Armand Traore and Shaun Wright-Phillips could be on the way to Loftus Road before Wednesday ends.

13. Fulham (14)

8 of 20

A 88th minute goal from Clint Dempsey was too little, too late for Fulham as they fell to Newcastle on Sunday.

Manager Martin Jol is looking to bring in a few players before Wednesday's transfer deadline, and it looks like Zdenek Grygera is line to join the club to replace the departed Carlos Salcido.

There is also speculation that Dempsey may also be on the move, but Fulham has a steep price tag on the American midfielder.

12. Bolton (8)

9 of 20

Bolton's road trip to Liverpool was not so pleasant, as the club lost 3-1.

Ivan Klasnic scored a consolation goal in the 90th minute to keep the Trotters from being shut out.

After their great start, Owen Coyle's club has lost to Manchester City and Liverpool already and have Manchester United and Arsenal on the schedule before September ends.

11. Wigan (17)

10 of 20

Franco di Santo was the unexpected hero for Wigan on Saturday, as the 22-year-old Argentine found the back of the net twice to put the Latics past QPR.

Roberto Martinez has his club off to a much better start than last season and will look to that continue their current form, as they face a tough task at Manchester City after the international break.

10. Sunderland (10)

11 of 20

Sunderland's trip into Wales ended in a goal-less draw with Swansea at the Liberty Stadium.

Steve Bruce and company will look to record their first win of the season, and what a first win it would be, against Chelsea in two weeks.

9. Everton (15)

12 of 20

Everton played in a game chock full of controversial penalties, and after Tim Howard saved two Blackburn penalties, it was time for the Toffees to get their own.

They did, and Mikel Arteta found the back of the net in the 90th minute to give the club their first win of the season.

8. Stoke (9)

13 of 20

Ryan Shotton went from squad player to hero for the Potters on Sunday, as he put home a 90th minute goal that gave his club the win over West Brom.

Tony Pulis' club remain undefeated, as they sit in ninth place with a win and two draws from their August matches.

7. Wolverhampton (3)

14 of 20

Wolves' unbeaten start to the season continued on Saturday, but they were unable to squeeze out a win on the road at Villa Park.

It looks like, so far, that Mick McCarthy has his squad playing above their potential, and if they can put up enough points early on in the season, Wolves may not have to face the stress of the relegation battle for another season.

6. Aston Villa (6)

15 of 20

After taking apart Blackburn last week, Aston Villa ran into a stubborn form Wolves side that fought them to a goal less draw.

Villa did lose Luke Young to QPR this weekend and Johnathon Hogg to Watford, and it looks like so far that no replacements have been targeted, but a lot could change in a day or two before the transfer window closes.

5. Newcastle (7)

16 of 20

Leon Best powered Newcastle to victory on Sunday, as his two goals were enough to down Fulham at St. James' Park.

Now with Joey Barton gone after his move to QPR, things have quieted down at the club that is looking to bring Davide Santon from Inter Milan.

4. Chelsea (5)

17 of 20

Chelsea began to show its true colors as title contenders at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Jose Bosingwa, Frank Lampard and new signing Juan Mata found the back of the net in the Blues' 3-1 win over Norwich.

Chelsea did lose Didier Drogba to a serious concussion after his collision with Norwich keeper John Ruddy. All reports point to Drogba having a healthy recovery, and the Ivorian will be out for at least a few weeks.

3. Liverpool (4)

18 of 20

Liverpool had quite the impressive outing at Anfield on Saturday as they took care of Bolton by a score of 3-1.

Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam scored their first Liverpool goals, and Martin Skrtel scored as well to move Kenny Dalglish's club to third place in the table.

2. Manchester City (1)

19 of 20

Sunday was the Edin Dzeko display of excellence during City's trip to White Hart Lane.

Dzeko scored four impressive goals and Sergio Aguero scored one to make the scoreline a lopsided 5-1.

This was supposed to be the biggest blowout of the day, but City were upstaged by their main rivals Manchester United just hours later.

1. Manchester United (2)

20 of 20

Manchester United made what you call a statement on Sunday at Old Trafford, and Arsenal were their victim.

An impressive eight goal display for United was a game in which they seemed to score at will against the opposition.

Wayne Rooney hit a hat trick from dead ball plays and could have had a fourth, but had a free kick nick the post.

Ashley Young scored two amazing goals as well. Ji-Sung Park and Danny Welbeck also contributed to the blowout by the defending champions.
