College Recruiting: Waubonsie Valley TE Troy Fumagalli Has Monster Varsity Debut
High school football is underway in northeastern Illinois, and no one has made as big of an impression as Waubonsie Valley junior tight end, Troy Fumagalli.
Friday against Naperville Central, Fumagalli—in his first varsity game of his career—made two catches.
Those two catches went for 90 yards and two touchdowns, as he helped Waubonsie Valley (1-0) top the Redhawks, 21-7.
The 6'5", 198 pound Fumagalli made his mark in the third quarter. The Warriors were leading Naperville Central 7-0 in a tough defensive contest. Waubonsie Valley was on the Redhawks' 31-yard-line, as senior quarterback Mitch Stefani hiked the ball.
Stefani did not see any openings for his receivers on the initial look, but he found Fumagalli breaking past Central's linebackers up the middle. Fumagalli caught the pass and scampered 69 yards for a touchdown.
With 3:30 left in the fourth quarter, Waubonsie Valley was in a fourth down situation on the Redhawks' 21 yard line. Head coach Paul Murphy elected to go for it. Stefani connected again with Fumagalli on another seam route, as the tight end blew passed Central's blitzing linebackers for another score.
"I was just executing that play in practice all week," Fumagalli said in a Chicago Tribune article as he was named Player of the Game. "I was just thinking about getting six. My line did a great job blocking today. All I did was run."
Is this just beginner's luck? Probably not. Fumagalli had poise and and ran precise routes with speed. He will only get better with more varsity experience and might soon have college scouts looking to recruit him.
