Premier League Team of the Week: Phil Jones, Wayne Rooney and Edin Dzeko
As summer draws to a close, the Premiership is getting itself up to full speed. If the league hadn't been exciting enough for you already, this weekend should certainly have fixed the problem.
An emphatic 8-2 thumping of a sickly Arsenal side signalled defending champions Manchester United's intent, while the "noisy neighbours" were equally impressive as they brushed aside Tottenham with a 5-1 thumping.
Liverpool dealt with Bolton efficiently and Chelsea managed to see off Norwich, although the 3-1 scoreline flattered them somewhat. Newcastle sent Fulham packing and Everton made the most of Blackburn's wastefulness to pick up a much needed victory.
QPR and West Brom had their weekends spoilt by Wigan and Stoke respectively, while 0-0 draws between Swansea and Sunderland and Aston Villa and Wolves ensured that there wasn't too much excitement in one dose.
All this means that the third week of the Premier League season is over and it is time for another team of the week. The team lines up in a 4-3-3 formation. Please leave any teams or thoughts you might have in the comments below.
GK Tim Krul
1 of 11Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul has been in impressive form this season and his display at the weekend was as good as any he has produced so far.
He made a string of excellent saves as he helped his team to a win against Fulham.
His save from a Danny Murphy header was the best of his efforts as he stopped what had looked to be a certain goal.
He made plenty more saves, including turning another goal-bound header onto the bar.
At 23, Krul is still learning the art of goalkeeping, but he is already a formidable foe. If he can keep his performances at their current level he could well find himself starting for both club, which he wasn't doing this time last year, and country.
Fulham manager Martin Jol certainly left the North East impressed by his compatriot.
LB Gael Clichy
2 of 11Gael Clichy must have been pleased when he made the switch from North London to Manchester after the results this weekend, but Arsenal certainly could have used the French defender this weekend.
As it was, the Manchester City left-back excelled in an all-round impressive display from an excellent City side.
Hardly busy with his defensive duties, Clichy made plenty of forays forward, taking full advantage of his blistering pace, as he helped his side put five past Harry Redknapp's Spurs.
When he was required to do something defensive, he did so comfortably and he has found himself in a side with the ruthlessness that Arsenal sometimes lacked. A solid season at left-back could get Clichy some of the trophies he claimed to crave why he made the move away from London this summer.
CB Phil Jones
3 of 11If I were Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic I would be worried about my place in the Manchester United team.
Since arriving from Blackburn this summer, Phil Jones has looked like one of the best defenders in the world.
He certainly does not look like a 19 year-old in his first season for Manchester United.
United might have romped to an 8-2 thrashing of Arsenal, but Phil Jones still had time to impress.
He dealt with Robin van Persie effectively, was dominant in the air and a calming influence alongside the nervy Johnny Evans.
Jones looks set to win his first England cap in the very near future, and could well have secured his place at centre-back for both England and Manchester United. The injury crisis that brought Phil Jones onto the field in the first match of the season could well prove to be something of a blessing in disguise.
CB Jonathan Woodgate
4 of 11Stoke's new arrival may have spent much of his career in a treatment room, but he showed this weekend that, when he is on the pitch, he is one of the best around.
The 31-year-old did no play a single game last season but has not missed a beat as he put in a solid display to help his side to an important clean sheet and three points.
Considering his injury record, the former Real Madrid man was agile and strong at the back and showed plenty of experience as he organised his team-mates with skill.
The Englishman was considered the leader of Real's defensive unit when he played and it is a role he has not forgotten.
If he can stay fit, Stoke could have found themselves a real bargain. On his day, Woodgate is a match for any striker, and with the bond he is quickly forming with Ryan Shawcross, Stoke could well have a very useful central-defensive unit.
RB Jose Bosingwa
5 of 11Jose Bosingwa had a tough season last time around as he was plagued by injuries and underperformed.
However, he seems to have found both fitness and form this season and was once again impressive in Chelsea's 3-1 victory.
He introduced himself to Norwich fans with a powerful shot into the top corner just six minutes into the game and continued to threaten throughout the match.
He was dangerous in attack on the right flank and did his job decently in defence. He was certainly not at fault, as some of his defensive partners were, for Norwich's goal and for almost gifting the visitors a goal on another occasion.
Bosingwa looks to have settled at Chelsea and could well be a vital player for Chelsea this season, much as Ashley Cole is on the other flank.
LM Ashley Young
6 of 11Sir Alex Ferguson has made some great signings in his time, and Ashley Young could prove to be one of them.
The England winger has had no problems settling in on the left-wing for the biggest club in the world and has put in some very promising displays.
This weekend was such a performance.
Aside from scoring two fantastic goals, Young always looked dangerous running down his wing and gave Arsenal's defence an excellent example of how to attack with speed.
That he was involved in five of United's eight goals shows just how important he was to the game, and just how valuable he could be for his new side in the coming season. Considering that he is just 26, he could be valuable for far longer than that as well.
CM Samir Nasri
7 of 11Manchester City seem to have bought themselves a player who is just hitting his prime.
Samir Nasri was sensational for his new club on his first appearance as he provided two assists for Edin Dzeko in City's 5-1 thumping of a sorry Tottenham side.
He provided a deadly accurate cross for one of Dzeko's goals and another cross from a similar position that was nearly as good. He also showed the same sort of pace and on-ball skill he has come to be known for as he broke through Tottenham's defence with ease.
Nasri settled in to his new side almost immediately and playing alongside Silva he seems to have already found a kindred spirit. The two of them could be one of the league's most deadly creative forces and are sure to cause havoc with defences of all qualities.
RM Jordan Henderson
8 of 11Any doubts that may have begun to surface about the suitability of Jordan Henderson for Liverpool's squad should have been dampened after his fantastic display on the wing this weekend.
He scored a great goal, although he had a lucky break in the build up.
His passing was excellent as he showed himself to be a key piece in Liverpool's dangerous attacking unit.
He linked well with his team-mates and seems to be a good fit for a promising Liverpool side.
Of course, one performance does not justify £20 million, so Henderson has a way to go before he can be considered good value for money, but his display will certainly have pleased King Kenny, as well as the fans, as Liverpool go in search of a return to the top four.
ST Luis Suarez
9 of 11Uruguayan Luis Suarez may not have found the back of the net this weekend but he put in a display that offered plenty in other areas.
Perhaps the highlight of the afternoon came when he played a cross in to Stewart Downing off the outside of his boot that curled in beautifully and very nearly allowed Downing to send the ball home.
He was very lively as he badgered Bolton's defence and could have had a penalty after being tripped by a hand inside the box.
Suarez should have scored twice but put his chip over the bar and had another opportunity to make it three in three but failed to convert, which will have disappointed the prolific striker.
However he was a real threat for a Bolton defence that just could not deal with his quick and varied movement, evidenced by the number of fouls he drew.
Liverpool's number seven will want to keep up this run of form that has seen him go from strength to strength since arriving at Merseyside.
ST Wayne Rooney
10 of 11Wayne Rooney seems to have returned to the form that made him such a terrifying opponent in the 2009-10 season as he scored a hat-trick and looked dangerous throughout his side's demolition of long-term rivals Arsenal.
Two inch perfect goals from free-kicks and a penalty showed the fans at Old Trafford just how good the England striker is from dead-ball situations, but he also showed plenty of skill from open play.
He almost scored an audacious lob and had any even more ambitious shot from inside his own half force a save.
An in-form Wayne Rooney is exactly what Sir Alex Ferguson will be looking for as he sends his new-look side on a charge for a 20th league crown. If this weekend's performance is anything to go by, Sir Alex has what he needs.
ST Edin Dzeko
11 of 11Edin Dzeko is beginning to show why City thought it was a good idea to spend £27 million on him.
He has now scored in all three of City's league games this season and was imperious for the Manchester club this weekend.
He netted four goals, taking his season's tally to six.
He scored two striker's goals from close range, one with each foot, and sent home a header from not much further out to complete his hat-trick.
However, the important thing is the positions he was getting into. He was a constant threat and seems to flourish in pressure situations.
His fourth goal was a wonderful shot that shows that, when he wants to, he can shoot from range.
Dzeko seems to be finding his place in Manchester City's star-studded side, and he could well help to minimise any effect that the loss of Tevez, if it actually happens, might have on the title hopefuls.
