Manchester United's New Trio: Phil Jones, Ashley Young and David De Gea

Suneet MohapatraJun 4, 2018

Sir Alex always manages to have a trick up his sleeve each season, that's how United removed Liverpool from their "perch".

This time it's Phil Jones, the next big sensation to emerge from the English Premier League. All through last year there was intense transfer speculation linking Jones to Liverpool and Arsenal, not once did United come in the picture. Then, all of a sudden, Ferguson waves his magic wand.

United signed Jones for £16.5m pounds plus add-ons, ensuring their defence is in safe hands for the next decade. Fantastic!

Jones, at 19 years of age, has already has a fantastic array of defensive skills. Concentration levels that never waiver , impeccable tackling , good pace, excellent positioning sense, marking expertise and he's ENGLISH! That's like striking gold for any EPL manager.

Jones has an excellent commanding ability, and never gets subdued by nerves. He is a big game player, a player that United fans (myself included) are going to worship in the coming years.

At present he looks set to emulate Rio Ferdinand, just remind him to not miss any doping tests!

Against Tottenham we saw him hassling opponents in defence, and even attacking a bit through marauding runs that made everyone gasp in disbelief. All i could say, "Lord have mercy on United's opponents."

I was very sceptical about the Young signing. He always seemed like a big fish in a small pond at Aston Villa, but he's settled himself in United like a duck takes to water.

His crossing, pace, mesmerising dribbling skills, and the ability to go past his man is exactly what United have been missing since the departure of Ronaldo. More importantly, we now have someone who is a genuine set-piece taker, unlike Nani who has this really irritating habit of switching off at times.

The second goal against West Bromwich Albion was pure inspiration from Young. The way he skipped past his man and used that sudden burst of pace to completely leave the defenders dumbstruck, whilst also ensuring a quality end product, was incredible. Anyone remember a young Ryan Giggs? Ashley Young, at all of 26, has an exciting future ahead of him.

So the great mystery of how to replace Ryan Giggs has hopefully been solved.

De Gea? Now that's a tricky questions. He's not won a lot of fans with his handling ability, shot stopping or poor concentration levels. But being just 20, and trying to settle in a completely new environment, are good reasons to ask for time to prove yourself.

He has proved himself in the pressure cooker atmosphere of Vicente Calderon and, given time, he will justify the reason Ferguson chose him to be the ONE.

He needs to learn English, earn the trust of his team-mates and get back to the form that made Manchester United pay £18m for a 20 year old. His skinny physique needs to adapt to the fast and physical English league.

But if Van Der Sar can then why not De Gea? Every single move of his will be intensely scrutinised, but the remarkable improvement he has shown in the span of three matches tells us all we need to know.

His ball handling and reflexes were spot on during the Tottenham game, however his distribution has been the most impressive. He displayed his footballing acumen by helping set-up United's second goal against Tottenham.

Casillas the best keeper in the world has said "David will retire us all", this should cast away any doubt whatsoever on De Gea's future.
