Dallas Cowboys: Tony Romo Finally Has the Weapons Needed to Win NFC East

Cian FaheyJun 5, 2018

The Philadelphia Eagles apparently made some moves this offseason, and they look like they will be a pretty good team. Or so I've heard. There wasn't much media talk about it.

The Dallas Cowboys are a team used to not being in the media spotlight.

Hold on...what?

Okay, let's try this again.

The Philadelphia Eagles have put themselves in the perfect position to win the NFC East apparently. That is a fair statement. However, it is not all wrapped up just yet.

Incredibly, the Dallas Cowboys have quietly gone about their business and put together a very potent looking offseason. Of course, that was supposedly true at this time last year, but this year it is actually true.

Defensively, the Cowboys are looking to Rob Ryan to turn around their biggest flaw from last season. Even though they were working with no running game, pass protection or their first-choice quarterback on offense, the defense was still their biggest problem.

The defense was that bad.

This year, it is very difficult to predict what will happen on that side of the ball for the Cowboys. You never know what effects a new coordinator can have on talented pieces.

One thing is for certain though: if Ryan can have a Mike Nolan in Denver/Miami-type of impact in Dallas, the Cowboys definitely have the offensive pieces to snatch the NFC East crown from the Eagles.

As far as a one-on-one matchup against the Eagles' defense goes, the Cowboys have one major advantage in Jason Witten. While the Eagles will be able to use Nnamdi Asomugha and Asante Samuel to keep Miles Austin and Dez Bryant in check, they have nobody that can matchup to Witten.

Casey Matthews? I don't think so. Kurt Coleman? Not a chance. Nate Allen? Nope.

The one thing the Eagles could try is use Asomugha on Witten, but Dez Bryant going against either Samuel or Rodgers-Cromartie creates another mismatch. Bryant's physical presence would allow him to dominate either of those players and repeatedly catch the football.

Bryant should have a huge year this season considering he is free of any and all of the problems that came with his rookie season. The return of Tony Romo gives him a better facilitator, while this year he has a whole rookie season and training camp under his belt opposed to being injured ahead of last year.

He is also back to 100 percent health after starting and finishing last season injured.

The release of Roy Williams actually benefits the Cowboys massively, as Kevin Ogletree can step up and essentially be the team's fourth receiver. If the Eagles figure out how to stop Witten, they definitely can't stop him or Martellus Bennett with what they've got in the spine of their team.

Protection was a major issue for the Cowboys last season, and that looks to have improved drastically. Doug Free has a season of experience under his belt, which seemed to be the only problem at the start of last season, while Tyron Smith will give them a lot of talent at right tackle.

With DeMarco Murray possibly reigniting the backfield behind Felix Jones, the Cowboys running game can only get better.

Of course, beating the Philadelphia Eagles doesn't guarantee an NFC East crown. But if that offense can keep Romo upright, they will be able to beat the Eagles.

And if they beat the alleged best team in football, then they shouldn't have too many struggles with the rest of their schedule.

The Giants imploded in the offseason with their offensive line retooling and loss of key pass catchers to free agency, as well as key defenders to various injuries. The Washington Redskins are on the rise, but are still a year or two—and probably a quarterback—away from competing at the very least.

While the defense remains a huge question mark in Dallas, it's not that long ago that it was a respectable unit with most of the same personnel. It is not totally out of the question that Ryan can infuse them with the determination and focus to be worthy of winning the NFC East.

The offense definitely looks worthy right now.
