LSU Football: Arrest Warrant Reportedly Issued for Jordan Jefferson, Josh Johns
The Baton Rouge Police Department has secured arrest warrants for LSU football players Jordan Jefferson and Josh Johns following a bar fight last week, according to the Associated Press. The players are charged with second-degree battery.
Both players are expected to promptly turn themselves in at the request of head coach Les Miles and attorney Nathan Fisher. The charge is a felony and partially based on the eyewitness report of Victoria Long, who said she saw several LSU players, including Jefferson and Johns, attacking a man at Shady's Bar on Aug. 19.
Jefferson is accused of kicking the unidentified victim in the face during the altercation. Andrew Lowery, who according to the police report attempted to help the victim, was injured in the brawl and also accuses Jefferson and Johns of starting the ruckus.
Lowery's story contradicts that of bar employees John Peak and Jordan Neldare, who claim Lowery was removed from the bar just minutes before the fight broke out. They also assert that the fight began before the truck Lowery mentions in the police report even arrived.
In stark contrast to the reports from bar patrons, Neldare said he witnessed Jefferson standing off to the side while the fight ensued. For unknown reasons, only Lowery and Long were quoted within the police report, according The Daily Reveille.
The arrest warrant was issued two days after police combed through Jefferson's apartment and seized 49 pairs of athletic shoes. Jefferson was expected to be the starting quarterback when LSU opened the season against Oregon on Sept. 3.
But now his availability, along with that of Johns, is in question after both players were suspended indefinitely, according to WBRZ in Baton Rouge.
Due to the conflicting eyewitness accounts of the events, it is unclear what actually occurred at Shady's that night, but the BRPD must have felt they had gathered sufficient evidence to charge the two players with a felony.
As is usually the case in hectic situations like this, the eyewitness reports vary significantly. Due to the fact that Lowery had just been kicked out of the bar and, according to the same Daily Reveille report, has a standing restraining order from an ex-girlfriend, it will be difficult to build a case based on his account of what happened.
