Arsenal Transfer Rumours: The 4 Who Could Come in to Strengthen the Gunners

Thomas HallettJun 7, 2018

With Champions League qualification now secured, and with a transfer war chest close to £100 million, Arsene Wenger will look to act quickly in the transfer market with just a week to go before deadline.

With the safety of the £25 million pay-out from participating in the Champions League groups stages, the Arsenal boss has identified a number key positions in which to strengthen the Arsenal's charge for honours this season.

Gary Cahill

The Bolton defender has long been a target for Arsenal; but the question Arsene Wenger will ask himself, is whether the £17 million asking price from Bolton is worth it for a player who can leave on a free transfer next season.

The England international is a player who will bring quality and leadership to an often shaky Arsenal back line. Cahill will also want to jump at the chance to perform in Europe’s elite competition in order to secure his place in the England starting 11.

With Phil Jagielka seemingly failing to convince Wenger to up his initial offer of £10 million, expect a move for Cahill over the next few days.

Mauro Zarate

The crafty Argentine has emerged as a late contender for the soon to be vacated third striker option at Arsenal. Falling out of favour at Lazio following the arrival of Miroslav Klose, Zarate has asked to be left out of any European games involving the side from Rome.

Zarate, who had an impressive spell with Birmingham City in the Premier League three season ago, will welcome to chance for a fresh start under Wenger, and will command a fee in the region of £10 million.

With Inter searching for a replacement for the departed Samuel Eto’o, Arsene Wenger will need to act quickly to secure a player he feels will add genuine quality and competition for places at the Emirates.

Zarate said, “I do not want to leave Lazio, but with the conditions here now it remains impossible for me to stay.”

Eden Hazard

Arsene Wenger has long been an admirer of the Belgian wing wizard. The player, who is still just 19, has committed himself to Lille this season following their successful league campaign last term.

Arsene Wenger, however, has remained coy on the possibility of signing Hazard, but will remain confident following the large windfall of cash following the departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri.

Hazard’s age should not deter Arsenal fans who may be thinking this is yet another player for the future. Hazard is possibly the continent's brightest young star and has admirers in La Liga and Serie A.

A player very much ready to perform now, he would join up with former Lille winger, Gervinho. The two played a big part with Moussa Sow in the three-pronged attack for Lille last season, earning them a league and cup double.

Hazard is a player who will command a fee in the region of £25 million, but with the player’s stock only rising, this may be the final chance Wenger gets to land his man.

Yann M'Vila

The French midfielder is another who has become a top priority for Wenger in the past few weeks. The Arsenal boss looks to M’Vila as a player very much in the mould of Patrick Vieira.

Strong, powerful, and capable of driving the Arsenal midfield forward, he would be the ideal candidate to allow Jack Wilshere the freedom to move further up the field for Arsenal and dictate the game.

Arsene Wenger does seem incredibly serious about landing M’Vila, already having two bids over £20 million rejected, and a follow-up bid expected before the weekend.

M’Vila’s age would represent incredible value for money, with the player already possessing the qualities needed to go straight into the Arsenal starting 11.

The stumbling block, however, will be Rennes’ reluctance to sell. They are a club who are in no financial trouble and the player is very unlikely to force through a move.
