Golden State Warriors Legends the Organization Should Hire As Consultants
Chris Mullin was recently inducted in the NBA Hall of Fame, shedding light on the reconciliation between him and the Golden State Warriors franchise.
His jersey is also going to be retired, finally. Can't figure out which one of these is worse: that his jersey is still not yet retired or that owner Joe Lacob didn't even realize that it hadn't been yet retired.
Mullin also stated that he would like to be in an NBA front office again and that he would have no problem joining the Warriors staff in some capacity.
He proudly said: "I'm a Warrior. That's who I am."
With everything that has gone on with the Warriors the past few decades, some good, but mostly bad, and so few "Warrior Legends," shouldn't they be inviting someone back who is that proud to be a Warrior, let alone an NBA Hall of Famer?
Here is a list of a few Warrior Legends that Golden State should consider bringing on board.
1. Chris Mullin
1 of 4Look, his first go as G.M. was a disaster. He signed Adonal Foyle and Derek Fisher to big-money deals, had a less-than-stellar draft track record and is why Andris Biedrins is making $9 million a year.
He even wanted to sign Baron Davis to an extension, but when ownership decided against that in favor of going after Elton Brand and Gilbert Arenas, they ended up signing Corey Maggette, which led to the bitter divorce of Mullin and the Warriors.
I bet he and all of them laugh now at the disruption those players caused. Has there been a worse group of players that a front office would get into such a dispute about?
With all the mistakes he made, he actually was at the helm when the Warriors made it to the second round of the playoffs, which isn't much, but it is more than anyone else has managed to accomplish in the last 20 years.
He did make mistakes, and maybe he has learned from them. He was hand-picked by former New York Knicks GM Donnie Walsh to be their next GM, but when that fell through, he ended up and is now with ESPN's broadcast team.
The Warriors have really cleaned house and seem to be moving in a positive direction. Bringing in Chris Mullin to consult, with the way the Warriors fans feel about him, would be a nice addition.
He could learn under Jerry West for a few years and take over his position when West decides to hang it up for good.
Former teammate and current head coach Mark Jackson might have a strong say in bringing Mullin back as well.
2. Tim Hardaway
2 of 4We haven't seen much of Tim Hardaway these days, but with Mullin coming back into good graces with the team, why not reach out to Tim Hardaway as well?
He has never really come back into the NBA light after the...let's say questionable comments at best that he made a few years back.
The Warriors could be doing him a favor by reaching out and bringing him on board. And maybe he could do them a favor by sorting out their current backcourt situation.
Loved by Warrior fans for many years, who would be a better game mentor for Stephen Curry, and Monta Ellis for that matter? Maybe he could be the guy to make that backcourt work.
Hardaway could really score from the point guard position, not to mention pass the ball while being a leader on the floor.
Curry's got the scoring thing down; if Hardaway could teach him how to be an NBA point guard and figure how he and Ellis can work together, maybe Hardaway is the answer they need.
3. Mitch Richmond
3 of 4Why not?
Bring back all of Run TMC, it was the best thing the Warriors have had in the last 25 years, plus it's not like we have a lot of "Legends" to choose from.
Have Mullin, Hardaway, and Mitch Richmond teach Curry, Ellis, and Dorell Wright how to play with each other like they used to. If that happens, and David Lee starts living up to his contract, the Warriors could really have something going.
If nothing else, it would be fun to see Run TMC back together once again.
4. Rick Barry
4 of 4There couldn't be a Golden State Warrior Legend list without having Rick Barry on it, could there?
Whether you love or hate him, you can't deny that he knows the game of basketball.
From being an announcer, we know that he can pick apart players with precise criticism while pointing everything out that they do wrong.
Maybe that would translate into a consultant role.
He has a great knowledge of the game, maybe stepping away from the microphone and dealing closer with players, not only he would benefit by becoming a teacher, but so would the players learning from one of the 50 greatest players.
Maybe by teaching, he would be able to shed that critical reputation, and help turn the Warriors into winners.
Rick Barry brought the only championship to the Bay Area; maybe bringing him back to work with the current franchise he could bring the same result.
With just these "Legends" to choose for this, maybe with the help of any of these guys, in 20 years if someone were to write a similar article, hopefully there would be a lot "Legends" to choose from.
