Rumor: Penn State To Name Matt McGloin Starter at Quarterback
The time to make a decision on the starting quarterback at Penn State is coming soon. With the first game of the season just under two weeks away, the question on everyone's mind is who will be behind center when Penn State takes the field against Indiana State on September 3.
According to the rumor of the day, via an insider message board, it appears Matt McGloin will be given the nod and there is a transfer underway.
Penn State has not confirmed this news, nor have they denied it to this point. A source from the Penn State football office confirmed via email that there was no indication this was the case. For good measure, David Jones of The Patriot News dispelled any notion that this was true by tweeting that sources in contact with both quarterbacks say the rumor is untrue.
Despite whether this is legitimate or not, the topic remains to be a hot debating point among the fanbase, and those who cover the team. Rob Bolden appears to have more room to grow within the program and in the system, and it would seem to be more beneficial to allow Bolden to have the opportunity to build experience on the field along with running back Silas Redd, another sophomore.
The debate should not be whether or not giving Bolden playing time now is the best course of action for the long-term, but whether or not Bolden is the best option to win games in 2011. You may feel that he is the superior choice to McGloin (this writer happens to agree), but that is the decision that will be left to the coaching staff.
