Kenny Dalglish and Player Reactions to Liverpool Victory over Arsenal

Karl MatchettJun 7, 2018

Liverpool finally ended their poor away form against Arsenal with a victory at the Emirates which was 11 years in the making.

Since Titi Camara fired the goal which beat the Gunners in 1999-2000 in a team containing the likes of Erik Meijer and Dominic Matteo, Liverpool had failed to beat Arsenal in the league at either Highbury or the new Emirates Stadium.

But today's 2-0 victory, courtesy of an own goal from Aaron Ramsey and a late strike from Luis Suarez, has changed all that.

Manager Kenny Dalglish spoke to the official club website after the game and had this to say:

"

It was a fantastic advert for the Premier League. The quality of football from both sides was well worthy of a mention. Overall in the game we probably just deserved to win. We know they had problems before the game and maybe they didn't have the strongest team they would like to have had on the pitch, but we can only play against the people who are on the pitch. We knew whoever they had on would be quality.

I thought we played particularly well, we just shaded it and probably deserved the win.

"

Dalglish also paid tribute to the strength of the squad this season, claiming that his ability to call Luis Suarez and Raul Meireles from the bench shows just how much the Reds have improved over the summer.

"

It's a hell of a good pair of substitutes to bring on.

We were really pleased with Andy Carroll's work, and Dirk Kuyt's, but when you've got two players of that quality on the bench, it would be wrong not to at least have a go with them.

I think we deserved a goal. That's why I say the squad is better than last year. This is a great example of how strong the squad is.

"

Centre back and vice captain of the club Jamie Carragher also had a few words to say on how pleased he was to have finally won away to Arsenal again.

"

I was aware of that fact. I think it was 10 or 11 years since we won here, and I think that incorporated Highbury into that too. It's because they have been such a great side for such a long time. It's a difficult place to come, but I think we deserved it today.

To be fair to them, they have a lot of injuries, and then they had a few more during the game, so it makes it very tough for them. We wanted to take advantage of that.

"

Carragher also admitted that the squad had been a little low on spirits after failing to start the new campaign with a win last week but was pleased that the Reds bounced back so well.

"

Last week was a bit of [a] comedown. Everyone had built themselves up, but unfortunately it never happened. We were on a little bit of a downer after the game, but we have to take heart from the fact we played so well here, and I think we had a little bit to prove. I think we did that.

"

New boy Jose Enrique enjoyed a clean sheet on what was just his second start for the club since signing from Newcastle United but says there is plenty more to come from him.

"

We had a lot chances in the first half but did not score. After the first one went in, we took control of the game and played very well. All of the new [outfield] players started today, and we did well. We won against one of the best teams in England. I think we have a lot of good players. We have to play together more to see where we are, but I think we did okay today.

I played a bit more attack-minded because I know my teammates a bit better. I think I played okay, but I still have to improve.

"

Liverpool now look forward to a League Cup second-round tie against Exeter City, in which several fringe players such as Maxi Rodriguez and Martin Skrtel could play after not making an appearance in the first two league games this season.
