View from Kingsmeadow, Volume 48: Four out of Six Not Too Shabby for Wimbledon

Jo-Ryan SalazarJun 7, 2018

Fresh off a breakthrough result against Dagenham and Redbridge, Terry Brown's AFC Wimbledon looked to build some steam when they traveled to Home Park in Plymouth to take on Plymouth Argyle.

"After getting over the euphoria of our first league points I took the opportunity to view the DVD on Sunday and it is really nice to appreciate that we can play in a more rugged, direct way if necessary," Brown told the media on Monday. "Although the aim is to play as much football as we can, I think it is essential that we are more pragmatic in this league and if we are not allowed to play then we have to have a Plan B and a Plan C.

"I thought Lee Minshull came into the side and gave us a new dimension in terms of strength and aerial ability. I spoke to the players today with reference to our performance on Saturday and made it clear that we are still looking to play our football, as and when we are able to play, and while we are not going to turn into the Crazy Gang I hope we have shown we can replicate some of their spirit."

The Wimbledon manager was happy to note that the team remained mostly healthy ahead of the tie.

"I don't think we picked up any new injuries on Saturday apart from Lee Minshull who has a sore heel," Brown said. "The squad remains the same for Tuesday night's game at Plymouth. Hopefully some of you will be able to make the long journey there and hopefully we can look forward to another exciting League 2 encounter.

"There is good news on the injury front with reference to Mat Mitchel-King. He had a scan on his spleen on Friday and it showed he is ready to resume full training with the first team, which he did today. The nature of this illness means we won't be rushing him back and we shall have to monitor his progress closely to make sure he doesn't suffer any relapse."

Jack Midson scored a brace in the 54th and 60th minutes to give the Wombles a well-deserved 2-0 victory.

Up next for the Dons was a Saturday affair with Hereford United.

"Tuesday night's win was a real bonus having come on the back of a well-earned three points at Dagenham," Brown told reporters on Thursday. "We went down to Plymouth on the Monday and prepared well for the game. However, we started off very sluggishly with most of the side looking to be still suffering from the after effects of a very difficult game on Saturday.

"We are in the nice position at the moment where I can look at the bench in the knowledge that I can not only bring on fresh legs but also quality players. Both Christian Jolley and Ricky Wellard made a real contribution to a first class second half display which saw us on the front foot from the 46th minute onwards."

Brown was pleased to see that his players were ready to compete in a league that is far more demanding than the Football Conference National.

"Games at this level appear to take a little bit more out of our squad than they did last year, both physically and mentally, and to gain back-to-back wins at any time in the season is a real bonus," Brown said. "A special mention for the back four and goalkeeper Seb Brown who again kept a clean sheet and special commendations for Sammy Moore, who I thought was brilliant on the night, and Jack Midson whose two goals will give him the confidence to aim for double figures as soon as possible."

After Hereford took an early lead by Delroy Facey in the eighth minute, Midson fired right back in the 25th minute to make it 1-1 at the break. However, that would be the final score.

With the Dons taking four out of six points, they find themselves in the middle of the Football League Two table. Up next for AFC Wimbledon is a match with Macclesfield Town on Saturday, Aug. 27. Kickoff is at 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET. at Moss Rose in Macclesfield.
