Chelsea Transfer Rumors: Juan Mata, Luka Modric & Players the Blues Still Want

Thomas AtzenhofferJun 7, 2018

The arrival of Andre-Villa Boas midsummer threw a short term wrench in Chelsea Football Club's transfer agenda as he needed time to asses his squad and decide what direction he wanted to take moving forward.

He has a selection issue up front among Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and young Daniel Sturridge who had a superb loan move to Bolton Wanderers in the second part of the Blues' previous campaign.

Some low profile arrivals have so far been the extent of the Chelsea transfer moves aside from the completion of Romelu Lukaku's move from RSC Anderlecht last week.

As the final eight days are looking the new boss in the face, there are still several players that the Blues are still in the mix for.

Scott Parker

West Ham midfielder Scott Parker has been an on and off Chelsea transfer target all summer.

The Hammers Captain is the type of player that knows how to build the play through the midfield as a driving force of creativity behind the front line.

He is possibly the lowest valued speculative transfer as his loan fee is believed to be only between £1.5 million and £4 million.

Kaka

Once before Real Madrid midfielder Kaka was a prime target for Roman Abramovich and the Chelsea Blues.

Recent reports continue to claim that once again the Brazilian playmaker is on their wish list. It has been several seasons since the world has seen the best of him, but that could make him a slightly more affordable option.

Gregory Van Der Wiel

Chelsea have been reportedly interested in the signing of Ajax wing back Gregory Van Der Wiel since late April.

Even though the club has undergone a managerial and fundamental change in the front room staff, the young Dutchman has still been rumored in their transfer plans.

He would most likely be brought in to starting taking over the right back spot from Branislav Ivanovic and Jose Bosingwa.

Luka Modric

4 of 6

Luka Modric is perhaps the most followed possible Chelsea transfer of the summer. However, if their current plans to bring in Juan Mata from Valencia succeed then his move could be off the table.

That has not yet been determined but it seems more and more likely that Juan Mata will be unveiled as a Blue in the next 24 hours.

The Croatian would most likely cost the Blues at least £25 million plus possibly the move of Yossi Benayoun in the opposite direction.

Spurs in reality should take that offer if it comes in as the additional funds would only serve to strengthen the club and the addition of Benayoun give them a proven playmaker in the Premier League though he has had a rough time of it with injuries since joining the Blues from Liverpool at the start of last season.

Juan Mata

5 of 6

Juan Mata looks to be a done deal and should be revealed on Monday or Tuesday afternoon if all goes according to plan.

His deal is reported to be worth €30 million. ESPNsoccernet.com have confirmed that the deal is in place and have quoted Chelsea's official statement:

''An agreement has been reached with Valencia CF for the transfer to Chelsea of midfielder Juan Manuel Mata. The move is now subject to the player passing a medical and agreeing personal terms.''

Andre Villas-Boas looks to have beaten Arsene Wenger to the punch and Mata will be the best Chelsea signing so far this summer, and possibly their best move since letting go of Joe Cole.

Conclusion

6 of 6

Mata looks like a done deal and as the Blues continue their late transfer dealings I expect them to add most likely at least one more player in addition to the Spaniard.

In the best scenario I think Modric will be a last minute singing at the death with at least Benayoun going the other way. However, adding Didier Drogba to the deal might make it irresistible by Redknapp as he needs a striker with the Ivorian's nose for goal.
