Jordan Jefferson: Did LSU QB Get in a Bar Fight?
LSU Quarterback Jordan Jefferson needs to spend less time getting into bar fights and more time worrying about his upcoming season.
While an athlete getting into trouble during the early hours of the morning is not surprising by any stretch the imagination, it remains to be something that is hard to understand. One would think that the upcoming football season, which holds so much promise for LSU, would be enough to keep Jefferson out of trouble. But for some reason, that’s not the case.
Reportedly, Jefferson wasn’t the only member of his team that was involved in this altercation. Jim Kleinpeter of the Times Picayune reports that Jefferson and some teammates were involved in a fight at a bar near the LSU campus:
"LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson was involved in an early morning fight outside a local bar Friday, Baton Rouge Police have confirmed.
Sgt. Don Stone said police are investigating whether Jefferson was a suspect or a victim in the incident which occurred between 1:30-2 a.m. at Shady's, a bar south of LSU's campus.
Stone said four people went to the hospital after the fight, but Jefferson was not among them. He said other unidentified LSU players were involved but police were still investigating.
LSU officials have declined comment until they have more information."
To be fair, it is unclear whether Jefferson was the victim or suspect of the fight. But may I ask what he is doing there in the first place?
This is something that we see far too often: Young athletes putting themselves in a position to get in trouble and sometimes even get hurt or killed. How many athletes need to face legal trouble, jail or worse before they realize that they are not above the situations they put themselves in?
In fact, they are usually targets!
It is important to note that we still don’t have the full details of the situation. That being said, my opinion still stands: Victim or suspect, innocent or guilty, there should have been zero reason for Jefferson and his teammates to be putting themselves in a position to get in trouble.
From a pure sports standpoint, this is just a stupid move. LSU is expected to be one of the better schools in the country, and it’s not a stretch to say that they have a good shot at the BCS National Championship.
What if these players have to face NCAA suspensions? How will that affect not only their teammates but the fans and their school as well? Even worse, what if somebody got seriously injured or even killed?
The fact of the matter is that this goes way beyond football. It’s about being smart and making good decisions.
Being a college athlete has a ton of perks, but it can also be a curse.
Hopefully this will be a much-needed wake-up call for Jefferson, his teammates and athletes all over the country.
Update: Jordan Jefferson has been "implicated" in the bar fight along with other football players.
