Alabama Football: Geno Smith Pulls the Trigger and Chooses the Crimson Tide
This time, when it came down to just two schools—Alabama and Auburn in this case—Alabama beat out Auburn once again and this time the prize was Geno Smith, a 4-star cornerback who was rated as one of the best in this year's national recruiting class.
He is from the Atlanta area, but had finally narrowed his choices to Alabama or Auburn. Nick Saban has mined a lot of gold from the state of Georgia lately and this one was another huge nugget.
At a press conference yesterday at his high school, St. Pius X Catholic, he said, "I committed to Alabama. Everything kind of came together when I went there for my last unofficial visit. It's the place where I felt the most comfortable. I love the players there and they all had nothing but great things to say about the school. Plus, they have a really good broadcasting/communications department."
But to Auburn, Tennessee and even Notre Dame's credit, Smith said the decision was a tough one and did like the other schools.
In the end it came down to two things, his overall comfort level with the school and Nick Saban's ability to make great defensive backs even better and get them ready for careers in the NFL.
While Smith is only 5'11'' and a 170 pounds, he plays much bigger on the field. With his senior year still to go, he should be a six-footer and about 180 by the time he's ready to play for the Tide.
With Saban having already landed a huge catch in Eddie Williams, adding Smith to this class can help secure the defensive backfield of Alabama for years to come. Especially when you factor in that he's still in the running for the number one safety, Landon Collins and last season added the number one defensive back Hasean Clinton-Dix.
This is really good news for Alabama and Smith will now try and help recruit others to come and join him at Alabama. It's a case of the rich getting richer in Tuscaloosa.
