EPL Top Scorers List: Sergio Aguero Heads the First Rankings List of the Season

Karl MatchettJun 7, 2018

The Premier League is back again, and with it comes an array of new attacking talent, familiar faces scoring goals and the usual crop of unexpected goal heroes.

Welcome to the first of a weekly series running here on Bleacher Report looking at the top scorers of the Premier League. Here we will look at who the heroes and villains of the week were, which players scored the best goals and of course, the players who make up the top few with the best numbers for the season.

At such an early stage of the campaign after just one match apiece (except Spurs and Everton), a list of merely the highest scorers would not hold much interest. Only one player has scored more than once.

But fear not, we shall instead select a few players to look at in more detail and see how likely they are to maintain their scoring form over the length of a season and which players will look to shoot their team to glory, only to fail miserably and probably cost their team a shot at the title, European spots or even the chance to avoid relegation.

3rd Place Top Scorers: 14 Players! (1 Goal)

1 of 6

We might as well start with the full list then:

In goal scoring order, all these players netted once over the opening weekend of the Premier League season:

Luis Suarez (Liverpool), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Mauro Formica (Blackburn), Ben Watson (Wigan), Steven Fletcher (Wolves), Shane Long (West Brom), Wes Hoolahan (Norwich), Gary Cahill (Bolton), Stephen Ward (Wolves), Seb Larsson (Sunderland), Edin Dzeko (Manchester City), Ivan Klasnic (Bolton), David Silva (Manchester City) and Fabrice Muamba (Bolton).

All those players were on target for their respective clubs, and I think its fair to say most of them can be expected to grace the score sheet again soon.

2nd Place Top Scorers: Own Goals! (2 Goals)

2 of 6

As well as a couple of missed penalties and red cards, the Premiership opening weekend also threw up a pair of own goals.

Danny Gabbidon of QPR is the unfortunate soul pictured here, sliding himself into misery against Bolton, while West Brom's Steven Reid also put through his own net against Manchester United.

1st Place Top Scorer: Sergio Aguero (Manchester City, 2 Goals)

3 of 6

Half an hour of English league football under his belt and Sergio "Kun" Aguero is already the Premiership's top goalscorer!

Not bad for City's record signing, who also claimed an assist.

Aguero benefited from entering the game just after his side had taken the lead against a tiring Swansea outfit and proceeded to bring far more aggression and skill to the match than the newly promoted side could handle, tapping in at the far post from Micah Richards' cross for his first and firing in from 20 yards for his second.

Come on, hands up who transferred him straight in to their fantasy football team after the match!

Season 2010-11: Dimitar Berbatov and Carlos Tevez

4 of 6

So, given this week's list is a little brief, let's take a look back at last season's goal heroes.

Both of the top scorers came from Manchester sides, with Bulgarian forward Dimitar Berbatov representing the red half for United and Carlos Tevez of Argentina and City in the blue.

With 20 goals apiece, they outscored their nearest rival Robin van Persie by two goals.

This season looks to be a different matter. Berbatov started this campaign as he ended the last one, on the substitutes' bench.

Carlos Tevez doesn't want to stay with Manchester City and despite having a bid accepted for him by Brazilian club Corinthians earlier in the summer, he's still there, leaving the player stuck in limbo after City signed a replacement for him in Aguero, in anticipation of Tevez leaving the club.

Best Goals of the Week: Gary Cahill, Sergio Aguero and Sebastien Larsson

5 of 6

Kun Aguero takes third place in the goal of the week tournament, with his second strike from distance which beat Michael Vorm into the far corner of the goal.

Gary Cahill takes second place for his superb effort again QPR. One touch to control and set himself before curling the ball right-footed past Paddy Kenny into the far top corner. A great strike for any player let alone a central defender!

Sebastien Larsson wins the goal of the week award however, with his superb mid-air volley at Anfield which won his side a point against Liverpool after a cross from the right hand side by Elmohamody.

Top Scorer for the Season?

6 of 6

He didn't trouble the goal statisticians this week, but a much improved showing from Chelsea's Fernando Torres had the pundits believing he was getting back to his best. Will this be his year?

Who else is your tip to win the Golden Boot for 2011-12? Didier Drogba started off on the bench while Torres started, and Rooney, Suarez and Dzeko all started the season in goalscoring form.

Spurs have four forwards, any of which could play or score on any given day, but do any of them have the consistency to trouble the top scorers?

Robin van Persie, Peter Odemwingie and Darren Bent were all regular goal scorers last season, while Andy Carroll will want to prove his immense worth following a big money move from Newcastle.
