Mexican Soccer: What Club America Has to Change in Order to Begin Winning Again

Jerry SanchezJun 7, 2018

As an America fan, I am extremely disappointed with their recent matches. They have not won a game since their first match against Queretaro. In many ways, America is not living up to expectations while they have the talent and capacity to win a good amount of games.

They have a great forward in Christian "Chucho" Benitez, a solid winger in Vicente Sanchez, and experienced defenders like Oscar Rojas and Aquivaldo Mosquera. Yet, they fail to win games and they seem sluggish at times.

However, I think it could be the way in which they handle games and their starting lineup is conducted by "El Maestro," Carlos Reinoso. They have to fix a couple of things so they make fans like me happy again and so they can bring home the title we've been longing to achieve since 2005.

Fix Defensive Woes

1 of 4

Like I mentioned before, their two best defenders are Mosquera and Rojas.

Rojas is a right back who can launch great attacks, but he can also just deny attackers' paths to goal.

Mosquera is a strong, tough defender who hardly lets anyone get through. That is if 'El Topo," Juan Carlos Valenzuela, isn't making mistakes. Topo plays one good game for every three bad games. He has to become way more consistent or else I would give up on him and sign a new defender.

You can also notice the absence of left back, Diego Reyes, who is making Mexico and fans proud at the moment. He is at the Under-20 World Cup and showing well. He is really needed and I hope to see him in the lineup after Mexico wins the World Cup again.

So the final defensive line should consist of: Rojas at RB, Mosquera at CRB, Valenzuela at LCB and Reyes at LB.

Find Navarette's Confindence

2 of 4

I think it's clear he has picked it up since his first game as becoming the next starting goalie. Nonetheless, he still looks quite nervous at times and hasn't found his comfort zone yet. I expect him to be alright in a month or so.

A major reason on why he should be nervous is because he is basically trying to fill in Guillermo Ochoa's big shoes. Ochoa is Mexico's best goalie and on top of that he was seen as a Top 50 in the world.

Now Navarette hasn't been a starting goalie in seven years. He's always been Ochoa's backup since joining America. Obviously it's incredibly difficult for anyone to get back into starting form.

He's a great goalkeeper but his confidence has to rise.

Work on Finishing

3 of 4

It's evident that one of the skills lacking in America is finishing. The best finisher on the team is easily Benitez. The second-best finisher is Sanchez.

And the third best is Vuoso, but his finishing is mediocre at best. He is lacking a killer instinct that made him great in Santos Laguna. He has missed and failed at numerous chances with America that has made him more of a headache than anything.

If he can make more of his attempts and capitalize on chances, he will quickly get back to becoming the great combo that he and Benitez were back with Santos.

Tweak the Starting Lineup

4 of 4

The lineup consists of great players. It's just a mystery of how the starting lineup, is a starting lineup. This is how it should look like:

Armando Navarette (GK)

Oscar Rojas (RB), Aquivaldo Mosquera (RCB), Juan Carlos Valenzuela (LCB), Diego Reyes (LB)

Angel Reyna, when he returns, (RM). In the meantime Reyna will be replaced by Jesus Molina as a more central right midfielder who won't be as offensive as Reyna.

Rosinei (CM), captain Vicente Sanchez (LM) and Daniel Montenegro (CAM) complete the midfield.

Strikers Vicente Matias Vuoso and Christian Benitez will be lethal once Vuoso gets back to scoring.

Key substitutions will be:

Edgar Castillo (LB or RB), Paul Aguilar (RB), Isaac Acuna (ST), Daniel Marquez (ST), Jose Jouquin Martinez (LM) and Juan Carlos Medina (RM).

These moves will surely make America the team they are supposed to be. Thanks for the read and 'Arriba el America!'
