Missouri Tigers Football: Should Mizzou Consider Moving to the SEC?

Adam SpencerJun 7, 2018

The latest rumors are that the SEC won’t extend an invitation to Texas A&M to become its 13th member, but it will keep A&M in mind for the future.

If the Aggies were to move to the SEC either now or in the future, the conference would likely add more teams.

Those teams were rumored to be Missouri, Clemson and Florida State.

So while no move to the SEC is going to happen in the near future, is it something the Missouri Tigers should consider?

Here are the biggest pros and cons the football team would face moving to the SEC.

Pros

Eventually, the Tigers would start getting better recruits. The best players like to play for the best teams in the best conferences.

On a national scale, the SEC is considered the best conference in college football. With teams like Alabama, Arkansas, LSU, Auburn, Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina, it’s not hard to see why.

Thus, after a couple of years in the SEC, big-name recruits from all over the country would start considering Mizzou for the chance to play against the best.

Cons

In the short term, the Tigers would be crushed in football.

They’d be added to the SEC West, which features Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, Auburn, Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

That is by far the toughest division in any conference in the country, and the Tigers simply wouldn’t be able to hang with the big boys.

However, as mentioned above, the recruiting would eventually become stronger on the national level, so things would even out.

They may never reach the level of Alabama or LSU, but they could become occasional threats to pull off a surprising division crown.

What Should They Do?

Missouri shouldn’t make any moves until it figures out what is happening with Texas A&M.

If the Aggies move, the Tigers should follow suit.

But if the Aggies stay, the Big 12 will remain a powerful conference, with the likes of Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Missouri.

It’ll be interesting to see where the chips fall in the next few years in terms of conference realignment.

The entire college football landscape could change in the next 10 years.
