Premier League Team of the Week: Torres, Rooney, Aguero and More
The first-round of Premier League matches has now been completed, albeit minus the Tottenham vs Everton fixture which was postponed due to the recent London riots. That means that it is now time for the first Premier League Team of the Week of the season.
There were 4-0 reversals for newly promoted QPR and Swansea against Bolton and Manchester City respectively, while Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool were held to draws. There were also hard fought draws for Fulham, against Aston Villa, and for Norwich and Wigan. Manchester United picked up a late win, but now have a defensive injury crisis.
So, in a 4-3-3 formation, featuring the best performers of this first round of matches, here is this week's Premier League Team of the Week.
GK Asmir Begovic
1 of 11Asmir Begovic kept Stoke in the game with a chance of a point against Chelsea, which they eventually got. The Bosnian was immense for his side as he made two stunning saves, one from a John Obi Mikel long shot that looked set to give the midfielder his first Premier League goal, and another from Nicolas Anelka as he made a spectacular dive.
He was kept busy all afternoon by a Chelsea side that had plenty of chances but, in large part due to Begovic, were unable to convert any of them. At 24-years-old, Begovic has huge potential and could well be one of the Premier League's top goalkeepers in the not too distant future. Stoke will certainly want to keep hold of him.
LB José Enrique
2 of 11Enrique only trained once with his new team before the match against Sunderland and was not expecting to start until the morning of the match, but despite these hurdles, he played well. He was solid at the back, not letting much at all through, which will please Liverpool fans worried about any potential weaknesses at the back.
The new arrival from Newcastle's passing was good, but as he himself has admitted, there is still room for improvement. He was not too threatening going forwards, an essential role for the modern wing-back. However, that is to be expected after so little time with his team-mates. As he adapts to playing in a new system the 25 year-old will only get better.
CB Gary Cahill
3 of 11The Bolton Wanderers centre-back's stock must be higher than ever after another assured performance in the heart of his side's defence, especially considering he also slotted a beautifully placed curling shot into the top corner from outside the box to open the scoring against newly promoted QPR. Cahill was as solid as ever in defence and was also a threat going forwards on more than just that one occasion.
Unsurprisingly, there is intense interest in the England international. Arsenal have long been linked with Cahill, and with money to spend after the sale of Fabregas, and potentially more to come if Nasri leaves, the centre-back could be headed for the Emirates. Harry Redknapp used his unexpected day off to watch Cahill and action, while a Manchester City coach was also present.
CB Wes Brown
4 of 11Wes Brown, on his Sunderland début, did not fail to impress. He was named man-of-the-match after putting in an impressive display that saw him deal effectively with both Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez.
The 31 year-old put in plenty of great tackles and looked confident on the ball. Carroll's aerial threat was largely eliminated thanks to his good positioning which ensured that even if Carroll won the ball in the air, he had nowhere to go.
Wes Brown could be a brilliant signing for Sunderland, especially considering that he cost the club just £1 million. He may have been overshadowed at Manchester United for much of his career by the likes of Ferdinand and Vidic, but he should now have a chance to prove just how good he is.
RB Chris Smalling
5 of 11Chris Smalling could well be a real star for Manchester United. The 21-year-old, normally a centre-back, filled in excellently at right back and didn't have any problems getting accustomed to a new position as he had had a few run-outs in the position during preseason.
With Manchester United's early season defensive crisis ruling out Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Rafael da Silva and Patrice Evra. Smalling is in with a good chance of putting a good run of games together for United, either at centre-back or at right-back. On the basis of his form against West Brom, he certainly deserves it.
After a solid performance in the season's first game, the man tipped to be the next Rio Ferdinand will be looking to carry on in similar form.
LM Ashley Young
6 of 11Some expressed doubts over whether Ashley Young would be a good edition to Manchester United's playing staff. However, if first impressions are anything to go by, that does not seem to be the case. The 26-year-old was a constant source of danger on the left wing, getting forward quickly, providing very good crosses and linking superbly with Wayne Rooney.
The former Aston Villa man was crucial in the build up to Rooney's goal, and he was superb on the left wing for the second goal, beating several men and providing the type of ball across the box that was almost bound to deflect of someone and go in.
Young looked confident from the get go and does not seem to have had any problems with the added pressure of playing for a club of United's standing. He was even excellent from set pieces, providing dangerous balls with regularity. He could be a real asset for the club for quite a while to come.
CM David Silva
7 of 11David Silva carried on in the same fine vein of form he was in last season with a classy display against newly promoted Swansea. He was the driving force behind the majority of Manchester City's attacks and was a constant threat. It was his driving run that created the first goal, he scored the third and was constantly probing away at Swansea's defence.
Silva is a great creative asset and does not receive the attention he deserves due to more high profile players such as Carlos Tevez and Mario Barwuah Balotelli spending time on the back pages for the wrong reasons. Silva is a real asset and he should not be taken for granted.
RM Sebastian Larsson
8 of 11Sunderland's new signing got off to a great start against Liverpool as he scored a spectacular equaliser. Sebastian Larsson set himself well and hit a perfectly timed flying side volley that gave Pepe Reina no chance.
There was more, however to Larsson's display than one fantastic goal. He was always threatening up and down the right flank and his delivery was good. He also sent in a dangerous free-kick that very nearly gave Sunderland a goal.
When you consider that Larsson arrived from Birmingham City on a free transfer, he could prove to be truly excellent value for the North East club. He helped them get off to a good start in a hard fixture against Liverpool, but he needs to keep performing to help Sunderland have a successful season.
ST Fernando Torres
9 of 11Fernando Torres' £50 million move to Chelsea in January last season did not immediately prove to be a good value for money as he suffered a long goal drought and looked thoroughly out of sorts for the remainder of the season.
However, we now seem to have the return of the old Torres, confident on the ball, not afraid to take a risk and always looking for a pass or chance to shoot. The Spaniard may not have scored, but he was always involved in everything that was good about Chelsea's display against Stoke. He could have won a penalty, got into great positions and created chances for others as he played in a slightly deeper role than usual.
He gave Ryan Shawcross a torrid time with his speed and surprising strength, Stoke's centre-back was lucky to come away from the game with just a yellow card. If Torres can continue in this form, Premier League defenders should be aware.
ST Wayne Rooney
10 of 11Wayne Rooney, complete with new hair, seems to be on top form. Manchester United's hit-man was at his best against West Brom, showing great creativity and goalscoring ability. His flick to Ashley Young in the build up to the first goal was brilliant, as were his control and left-footed shot into the bottom corner.
As usual, Rooney was not afraid to drop deep and played several clever balls, providing midfielder Nani with a chance that he really should have buried rather than sending over the bar. The 25-year-old England star seems to have got used to playing with Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck and Young very quickly and they could be a potent force as Sir Alex Ferguson moves firmly into his latest cycle of replenishing his squad with younger players.
ST Sergio Aguero
11 of 11Argentinian Sergio Aguero may not have come on until the 59th minute of Manchester City's match against Swansea, but once he was on, he was brilliant. It took him under 10 minutes to score from short range, as he got himself into exactly the type of position every striker should be in, and he later added a stunning 25 yard shot that left the debuting Michel Vorm for dead as it flew into the far corner of the goal.
In addition to his two goals, Aguero was also central to Silva's goal, which was Manchester City's third. His flick over the keeper before hooking a ball that look destined to go out of play back to David Silva showed both skill and athleticism. If his first display in the Premier League for City is anything to go by, Aguero, and Manchester City, could be a real threat at the top end of the league.
