Report: SEC Expansion Won't Stop with Texas A&M
As if the SEC wasn’t tough enough, the powers that be are going to add even more talent.
College football was already run by the powerhouse teams in the SEC, but now that there are reports of more teams entering, there may be even less wins to go around. High-ranking sources at Texas A&M are reporting that the school will be moving from the Big 12 to the SEC as early as Monday.
"Texas A&M could become the newest members of the SEC as early as Monday, exiting the Big 12 and severing longstanding relationships with Texas, Baylor and Texas Tech. SEC presidents are scheduled to meet Saturday to consider expansion, with A&M at the top of the list, sources said. A proactive A&M board of regents moved a scheduled meeting from Aug. 22 to Monday. One of the agenda items: Allowing A&M president Bowen Loftin “to take all actions relating to Texas A&M University’s athletic conference alignment.” Sources in Aggieland say an announcement could come as early as Monday if A&M is able to secure an SEC bid, accept it and notify the Big 12. A Big 12 school source estimated the chances of A&M joining the SEC at 90 percent or better.
"
The SEC was already one of the toughest in college football before the possible addition of Texas A&M, but it looks like the incoming teams may not be limited to just one.
More reports are surfacing that other teams may be looking to make the jump to the elite conference.
"High ranking source at Texas A&M confirms, going to SEC. Clemson, FSU, Missouri likely to join," ESPN insider Doug Gottlieb said on twitter.
Missouri has denied the rumors, but with all of this expansion in one of the toughest conferences in college football, if Missouri has the opportunity to make the transition they would be foolish not to accept.
With the addition of the four speculated teams, the Southeastern Conference would be far and above the most elite in all of college football. While that may be great for competition, the idea of recruiting will become cloudy.
There is already too much talk of paying for players, and the increased competition in the conference will lead to even more opportunities for corruption. That is just a truth that the conference will have to face.
As if the NFL didn’t already have a vested interest in the SEC, the increased competition will also breed even more stars that will dominate in the league.
Teams like Florida, Alabama, Auburn, LSU and many more grace the top 25 every season, the college football world may be getting an even bigger dose of tough SEC football.
