Texas A&M to Join the SEC: Florida State to Follow?
A high-ranking school official has confirmed to ESPN's Doug Gottlieb that Texas A&M will finally make the long-rumored move into the SEC.
This source is also reporting that Florida State, Clemson and Missouri could follow the Aggies in their conference move.
The Texas A&M board of regents called a meeting Monday that included talks of possible conference realignment. SEC officials could meet as early as today to decide on what schools to offer invitations to.
Reports were released early Saturday morning that Texas A&M would accept an invitation, then were confirmed just before 11 AM.
Rumors of Florida State, Clemson and Missouri also joining the SEC are swirling, although all questions asked about those possible moves have been denied.
Florida State president Eric Barron deflected the possibility of moving to the SEC, but did not altogether rule it out.
"I don't think there is anything to talk about right now," said Barron. "I don't speculate when there's no conversation."
Texas A&M joining the SEC could very well mean the end of the Big 12 conference, with Texas mulling a decision on their future. The Longhorns could make a move to become independent or possibly join the Pac-12 or Big Ten.
No timetable has been set for when the Aggies would officially join the SEC, but there is speculation that they could begin conference play as early as 2012.
An official announcement is expected Monday.
This move seems to signal the dawn of the "super conference," and Texas A&M to the SEC could just be the first of many dominoes to fall.
