New York Giants: 5 Free Agents the Giants Should Look at
Thus far, Giants fans have witnessed an alarming offseason to say the least.
Shortly after the players and the owners signed off on a new collective bargaining agreement, Giants general manager Jerry Reese admittedly stated that their priorities lay within re-signing Ahmad Bradshaw, Kevin Boss, and Steve Smith.
Furthermore, the Giants also needed to address the offensive line and an already injury plagued defense.
Well, now here the Giants are today, minus record setting wide receiver Steve Smith who surprisingly walked away to join in-division nemesis, the "Dream Team" Philadelphia Eagles.
And you know your organization is in trouble when your starting tight end who played a vital role in your team's recent Super Bowl success, opts to leave you for the Oakland Raiders of all teams.
The big blue whiffed on Plaxico Burress whom the New York Jets plain and simply offered more money, and now have a distraught All-World defensive end in Osi Umenyiora who is unhappy and wants out.
Umenyiora never got the restructured deal he sought out and will now be "stuck" in New York unless he pulls a Carson Palmer since the Giants are unwilling to deal him.
First round draft pick Prince Amukamara will be out for at least two months after suffering a foot injury, and Bruce Johnson is already out for the season with an injured Achilles.
So it is clear that Jerry Reese is on the clock needing to fill some holes in the secondary, and I must also add that Keith Bulluck is not getting any younger at the linebacker position.
So who is still out there on the free agency market you ask? Look no further as I introduce you to five free agents the New York Giants need to take a good sharp look at.
1. LB Kirk Morrison
1 of 5Arguably the top prize left in this year's free agency class.
Though Morrison did not have the greatest year statistically last year, he still has tremendous upside. He can be a great run stopping force.
He could flourish in the run-oriented NFC East, and would most likely welcome getting out of the pass heavy AFC South.
With Clint Sintim already battling injuries, and Keith Bulluck unable to get it done, look for Morrison to vastly improve his 89 tackle mark of last year.
I see two to three potential Pro Bowls for Morrison as a Giant.
2. SS Darren Sharper
2 of 5Age is nothing but a number right?
Although Sharper will turn 36 this season, you just can go without wondering if he has another great season left.
Sharper currently ranks sixth on the NFL's all-time interceptions list with 63.
And even though he missed eight games due to injury last year, we must remember that it was only the year before that, in which he recorded nine interceptions.
If the performance won't be to Perry Fewell's liking at least look for Sharper to be a great mentor and teacher for some of the younger guys.
But with Deon Grant now gone, I suggest the Giants pull the trigger on this potential Hall of Famer.
3. CB Kelvin Hayden
3 of 5Hayden would be a solid fit into the Giants secondary as a possible nickelback.
He brings a ton of experience to the table being that he is a Super Bowl Champion. Hayden wasn't just there for a ride either he returned an interception for a 56-yard touchdown as well.
He met with the Chicago Bears but after a physical they released a statement saying they were no longer interested in acquiring his services.
This is rather alarming being that Hayden is coming off a neck injury which seemingly still causes some problems.
No one will expect Hayden to be a Pro Bowl type player, this deal would make sense for adding depth to a seemingly injury prone secondary.
4. LB Lofa Tatupu
4 of 5Can't go wrong with signing a 28-year-old three-time Pro Bowler.
Tatupu has the ability to make a huge impact within the Giants linebacking corps.
He isn't a free agent because he didn't produce, but merely because the Seahawks did not want to pay him the $4.3 million dollars he was due to earn.
Seems like a low amount to release a guy like Tatupu over, but the Seahawks made it clear they were headed in a different direction for the upcoming season.
Could be a huge gain for the Giants which they should thank the Seahawks for if all works out.
5. G/T Trai Essex
5 of 5Trai Essex can play both the guard and tackle position which brings versatility to your line.
The signing of former 49er center David Baas was a significant one, but with losses like those of Shaun O'Hara and Rich Seubert it can't hurt to solidify your line.
David Diehl will be moving from left guard back to his original position of left tackle, while Will Beatty will take over the duties at left guard.
You never know how a shuffle like that will turn out so you may as well sign yourself an insurance policy.
