Premier League Transfer Rankings: The Top 5 Signings so Far This Summer

Will TideyJun 7, 2018

With the new Premier League season upon us, it's time for the new arrivals to live up to their hype. They've been brought with huge transfer fees and given huge salaries, but which ones will truly deliver value to their club?

There are still over two weeks to go before the transfer window slams shut at the end of August, but here are my top five deals done so far.

No sign of Wesley Sneijder as of yet, but suffice to say he'll be near the top of this list if a deal to Manchester United goes through in the next week or so.

5. Stewart Downing

1 of 5

A lot of Liverpool fans weren't massively excited about the arrival of Stewart Downing, but I have a feeling he could prove one of the shrewdest deals of the summer.

The quality of Downing's delivery from the left could potentially provide a rich supply line for Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll.

4. Phil Jones

2 of 5

Phil Jones might be behind Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand in the Manchester United pecking order, but I still expect him to play a key role this season.

With United battling on all fronts and Ferdinand prone to injury, Jones will get his chance. When he does, it might prove hard to dislodge him from the starting lineup.

The 19-year-old can also play a defensive role in midfield, which may come in handy Europe for United.

3. Shay Given

3 of 5

Aston Villa paid just £3.5 million to get Shay Given, a goalkeeper who just a couple of seasons ago was considered the best in the Premier League.

With Villa having offloaded a number of their best players this summer, Given will be crucial to what will surely be a season of consolidation.

2. Ashley Young

4 of 5

Sir Alex Ferguson loves a winger, and in Ashley Young, he's got one of the most effective in the Premier League.

Young's stats don't lie. He delivered assists in large numbers for Aston Villa, and with the quality of Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov alongside him, he should go even higher this time around.

Judging by his performance in the Community Shield, Young is the fittest he's ever been and ready to hit the ground running.

1. Sergio Aguero

5 of 5

Manchester City paid £38 million for Sergio Aguero, but it could still prove the bargain of the summer.

The 23-year-old scored a hatful in La Liga for Atletico Madrid and has exactly the combination of speed, strength and technique needed to thrive in the Premier League.

If he starts firing, City could be genuine title contenders.
