Ranking the Coolest Team Nicknames in World Football
What are some of the coolest names in World Football? I will rank the teams that I believe have the coolest nicknames from around the world.
In my attempt to do that, this list will shy away from those teams that have multiple nicknames. It will solely be based on a single nickname for a club team.
Here are my 10 selections.
No 10: Racing Club De Avellaneda: Argentina
1 of 10Nickname: The Glorious Academy
Coach: Diego Simeone
The Glorious Academy was founded in in 1903.
No 9: FC Arsenal Kyiv: Ukraine
2 of 10Nickname: Cannoneers
Coach: Leonid Kuchouk
FC Arsenal Kyiv were founded in 2001.
The Cannoneers were runners-up twice in the Ukrainian Cup.
No 8: Pohang: South Korea
3 of 10Nickname: Steelers
Coach: Hwang Sun-Hong
Pohang was founded in 1973. They are my personal favorite from all of the unknown domestic leagues.
Maybe that is just because I am from Pittsburgh, and their nickname is the same as our football team.
Pohang has won the South Korean league four times.
No 7: New York: United States
4 of 10Nickname: Red Bulls
Coach: Hans Backe
The Red Bulls...I hated the name when they changed it from the MetroStars in 2006. However, the name has grown on me a little bit.
It gets the nod in my top 10 because of how odd it really is. Unlike the Brita Red Bulls, the New York Red Bulls are about the drink, not the animal.
No 6: Sun Hei SC: Hong Kong
5 of 10Nickname: Sunrise
Coach: Jose Ricardo Rambo
Not only is the nickname "sunrise" pretty sweet, but their head coach is Rambo. What more do you want?
Sun Hei SC was founded in 1986. The Sunrise have won the first division three times in their 25-year history.
No 5: Buraspor: Turkey
6 of 10Nickname: Yesil Timsahlar (Green Crocodiles)
Coach: Ertugrul Saglam
Buraspor was founded in 1963.
Most of the crocodiles that I am aware of are green, but nevertheless, this is still a cool nickname.
The Green Crocodiles were eliminated in the UEFA Champions League in 2010-11 after gaining one point.
No 4: Chiangrai United F.C.: Thailand
7 of 10Nickname: The Fighting Beetles
Coach: Stefano Cugurra
The Fighting Beetles was founded in 2009.
A new club, with a sweet name.
No 3: Citizen Football Club: Hong Kong
8 of 10Nickname: Flat Bags
Coach: Jorginho Rodrigues
I'm not too sure why this one stands out for me, but it does. The Flat Bags were founded in 1968.
Citizen Football Club has won the Hong Kong Second Division League twice in their history.
No 2: ToT S.C.: Thailand
9 of 10Nickname: Hello
Coach: Vacant
Hello was founded in 1954.
Although it is very weird to say in a sentence, Hello is an awesome nickname for a club. It doesn't seem to make sense, but that doesn't really matter.
No 1: Bangkok Glass F.C.: Thailand
10 of 10Nickname: The Glass Rabbits
Coach: Supasil Leelarit
The Glass Rabbits was founded in 2006.
This has to be one of the coolest nicknames/logos you will ever see. It gets my nod as the coolest in the world.
