EPL Transfer News: Top 10 Transfers from 10 Different Clubs

James KentAug 9, 2011

The Premier League season kicks off on Saturday and fans all over the world are eager to see how their clubs will perform. And naturally, everyone wants to see the new signings and watch how they will perform. It is, of course, a little bit difficult to compose a list bearing in mind there is still a lot of the transfer window to go and we know in the Premier League a number of high-profile deals could be set to happen in the coming weeks.

That all being said, most clubs also look to have the majority of their business done in preseason and ready for the first game. Therefore, a lot of the teams in the Premier League will have finished their business until the next transfer window opens in January.

The Selection Process

1 of 12

Despite the fact that only a few clubs have been involved in big-money buys it would be easy to focus purely on the big signings at Manchester United and Liverpool. Therefore, I have decided to try and bring as many Premier League clubs into the list as possible. With this in mind, I will not include anymore than one signing from any one Premier League club.

The players selected are those that have the best chance to make a real impact in the Premier League. This isn't a list that will purely look at transfer fees—but simply look at who can make it in the Premier League. There will also be a bias to players making an instant impact.

Honorable Mentions for the Nearly Men

2 of 12

It can be very difficult to pick out just 10 signings so there are a number of other players that can consider themselves to be unlucky to not be included. This players receive an honorable mention—but there are also others that could be considered unlucky to not get a mention.

Honorable Mentions

  • Shay Given (Aston Villa)
  • Connor Wickham (Sunderland)
  • Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal)
  • Charles N'Zogbia (Aston Villa)
  • Phil Jones and David de Gea (Manchester United)
  • Gael Clichy (Manchester City)
  • Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing (Liverpool)

10. Danny Graham (Swansea City)

3 of 12

Some people may be surprised to see Danny Graham's name mentioned on this list. However, Swansea are obviously banking on him to score goals in the Premier League. In a deal worth in the region of £4 million, he has become Swansea's biggest signing and the first piece of business they did.

Last season, Graham struck 24 Championship goals in a side that failed to even reach the playoffs and will look to prove he can also score goals in the Premier League. If Graham can score the goals to keep Swansea in the Premier League, then the £4 million fee will look like a snip. Danny Graham has every chance of being a surprise package in the Premier League.

9. DJ Campbell (QPR)

4 of 12

Last season, DJ Campbell showed what he was all about by scoring 13 goals in the Premier League. DJ has now signed for QPR for a relatively nominal transfer fee and supporters of the club will be hoping he can repeat his form for last season.

One problem that Campbell may have is that everyone will expect him to do well, in comparison with last season when nothing was really expected of him. Premier League defences will be ready and waiting to keep him out. The partnership between DJ Campbell and Jay Bothroyd is likely to be vital if QPR are going to have any chance of surviving.

8. Ali Al Habsi (Wigan Athletic)

5 of 12

Wigan would have almost certainly had gone down last season without the form of Ali Al Habsi. At the time, the goalkeeper was on loan from Bolton. However, the player has now made a move to the club on a permanent basis for a deal in the region of £4.4 million and it could prove to be a very important piece of business.

Having been at the club last season, he will be raring to go and his reflexes could play a significant part in keeping Wigan in the Premier League for another season. However, Wigan will need to protect him as much as possible—because he is not a miracle man.

7. Sebastian Larsson (Sunderland)

6 of 12

Sunderland have been busy in the transfer market and this free transfer could prove to be their best piece of business. Larsson certainly proved to be a capable player in his time with Birmingham and it's only right and proper he should continue to ply his trade in the Premier League.

Although a winger by trade, Larsson's biggest strength is arguably delivery from dead-ball situations. Sunderland may find they score a lot of goals next season from corner and free kicks and Larsson will most likely be the provider or scorer of those goals. What is for sure is that Sunderland have done a very good bit of business by signing this player on a free.

6. Jamie O'Hara (Wolves)

7 of 12

Jamie O'Hara is a big signing this summer for Wolves and having spent time on loan at the club last season, Wolves fans have a fair idea on what they are getting for their reported £5.6 million signing: a composed and energetic midfielder that is also capable of grabbing a goal.

Wolves will be expected to struggle in the Premier League again—but in O'Hara, they appear to have a player with a touch of Premier League class. It remains to be seen if the player can help Wolves survive, but if he can, then it will be money well spent. Wolves also suggest that the transfer fee they paid was less than the £5.6 million quoted.

5. Demba Ba (Newcastle United)

8 of 12

Ba had a real impact on the Premier League towards the end of last season—but his goals were not enough to save West Ham United. Newcastle United will be hoping Ba can fill the scoring boots left by Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan to some extent.

There seem to be a lot of issues going on at Newcastle at the moment, so Ba will need to score goals to keep Newcastle out of trouble. If in 12 months' time Newcastle are still a Premier League club in part thanks to goals from Ba, then Newcastle would have grabbed themselves a bargain.

4. Charlie Adam (Liverpool)

9 of 12

Charlie Adam's move to Liverpool was one of the worst-kept secrets in football—but the deal finally happened and he promises to be a quality addition. Adam was certainly a player that shone in the Premier League last season with Blackpool, where he managed to score 13 goals.

Adam showed a real ability from set pieces and is a very adept corner taker and a real threat from direct free kicks. Playing at a bigger club with better players should really bring out the best in Adam and he could well have another standout season in helping Liverpool getting back into the top four.

3. Ashley Young (Manchester United)

10 of 12

Ashley Young is a very exciting player to watch and a move from Aston Villa always looked very likely after the poor season they had last year. The move to Manchester United will certainly benefit Young and he should now expect to feature heavily for England if he can do likewise for Manchester United.

The prospect of Nani and Young playing in the same United team is certainly exciting and teams in the Premier League and the Champions League should be very fearful of Manchester United next season. The transfer fee will look like a bargain if United record a league and European double next season. Young is certainly a player to keep an eye on next season.

Last season, Young provided 11 assists for his Aston Villa teammates.

2. Gervinho (Arsenal)

11 of 12

There is no doubt that Arsenal are taking a bit of a risk on Ivory Coast striker Gervinho. However, he has been getting rave reviews in France playing for Lille. And let's face it: Arsene Wenger knows the French market better than most. Gervinho is a classic Wenger sort of player in that he is someone he can develop and turn into a world-class striker.

Premier League teams won't quite know what to expect with Gervinho and he could turn out to be a very clever piece of business by Arsenal. The Premier League just might be looking at the new Didier Drogba.

1. Sergio Aguero (Manchester City)

12 of 12

It's fair to say that Manchester City aren't messing around with this signing. They needed a replacement for Carlos Tevez and they signed just about the best one they could. The striker is young and has been prolific in Spain.

Manchester City may have spent a lot on this player, but they will get value for the money and a player that will surely score shedloads of goals in the Premier League. Quite simply this is the sort of signing that gives Manchester City a real shot at winning the Premier League with Aguero being the top scorer.
