Penn State Football: 5 Under the Radar Commitments in the Class of 2012
The Penn State Nittany Lions' recruiting class currently has 13 players on it. Some of these players will be heralded and arrive with expectations. Others will not.
These players will be expected to contribute to the future of Penn State tradition. Players will become household names—whether it be their freshman season or as an upperclassmen.
Penn State will have holes to fill on both sides of the ball after this season. All players arriving on campus will have a chance to earn playing time early on.
As the recruiting process wears on, Penn State will continue to receive commitments. Whether they are U.S. Army All-Americans or an under the radar player from a small town, each player will be given a chance to add to the Penn State legacy.
Here are five under the radar commitments in the class of 2012:
Jake Kiley
1 of 5Jake Kiley is classified as an athlete coming out of New Hampton, NH. He lined up at both quarterback and cornerback in high school.
Kiley's versatility was not wasted. He was the Evergreen League Player of the Year in 2010 and was also part of the All New England team.
He is shifty with the ball in his hands and he understands how to make players miss in the open field.
Kiley will not arrive in Happy Valley with a ton of hype. However, he could change that before his four years at Penn State are up. Versatile athletes who can play multiple positions are becoming a necessity for teams to carry.
Penn State has found ways to use current athletes Devon Smith and Curtis Drake when healthy. Kiley could be the next in line to fill that role.
Skyler Mornhinweg
2 of 5Skyler Mornhinweg decided to stay in Pennsylvania and commit to Penn State.
Mornhinweg's dual-threat skill set will fit perfectly in Penn State's spread offense. At 6'3'', Mornhinweg has the height needed to command the pocket, and his 4.6 40 time suggests he has the speed to make plays in the open field.
Penn State has pursued dual-threat quarterbacks aggressively in recent years. Mornhinweg will have a chance to come in and learn behind veterans above him on the depth chart.
He may need some time to learn the offense and add some bulk.
Anthony Stanko
3 of 5Anthony Stanko has the build needed to develop into a quality offensive tackle while at Penn State.
At 6'5'' and 302 lbs., Stanko has the frame to bulk up once he is working on a collegiate weight program.
Penn State will have holes opening on the offensive line over the next few seasons with players graduating. Stanko could be a player to keep an eye on as he gains more experience.
He needs to work on his quickness, but he has the strength and hands needed to become a quality bookend on the Penn State offensive line.
Stanko could achieve more than his current recruiting hype would suggest.
Nyeem Wartman
4 of 5Nyeem Wartman will look to add to the "Linebacker U" legacy as a Penn State Nittany Lion.
Wartman, out of Valley View High School, is an inside linebacker who could make an impact on special teams early on.
He collected 115 tackles last season while also forcing three fumbles and intercepting one pass.
Wartman possesses the speed and athleticism Tom Bradley loves in his linebackers. He will need a year or two to learn Bradley's Cover-3 system, but he could eventually make an impact on the field as a regular.
The tools are there for Wartman to become a household name in the future.
Jesse James
5 of 5Jesse James has the size to play offensive line, and the speed to play tight end.
With the lack of tight end depth currently at Penn State, expect James to line up there when he arrives in Happy Valley.
At 6'7'' and 248 lbs., James has the possibility to add weight to his tall frame. He has speed, but he needs to work on his hands if he wants to be a threat in the passing game.
James could also move to offensive tackle if the transition to tight end does not work. He has the size and athleticism needed to keep Big Ten defensive ends at bay.
Because of his size, James becomes an interesting player in Penn State's future—if they can find him a position.
