College Football Predictions: When Oklahoma, FSU & Every Top 5 Team Will Lose

Patrick ClarkeJun 7, 2018

The 2011 preseason college football coaches poll has been released, and the Oklahoma Sooners will enter the new season as the favorite to win it all, carrying the No. 1 overall ranking.

Oklahoma received 42 of a possible 59 votes; Alabama, Oregon and LSU were the only other teams to receive No. 1 votes.

Florida State rounds out the top five in the preseason polls, which features two SEC powerhouses in Alabama and LSU, both will be vying for the SEC West division this season.

The defending champion Auburn Tigers enter the year ranked No. 19, and are expected to fade into mediocrity after the loss of superstar quarterback Cam Newton and defensive stopper Nick Fairley.

Join Bleacher Report as we predict when and where each top five team will stumble this season.

No. 5: Florida State Seminoles

1 of 5

The Seminoles won 10 games in 2010, going 6-2 in the ACC before falling to a hot Virginia Tech team in the conference title game, 44-33.

Florida State rebounded nicely with a nine-point win over the South Carolina Gamecocks in the Chick-fil-A Bowl to secure a solid ranking heading into the offseason.

The excitement surrounding the restored program might be short-lived however as the Seminoles are scheduled to host the No. 1 ranked Oklahoma Sooners in Week 3.

The September 17 matchup will be one of the season's most anticipated contests, but will likely mark the first speed bump in an otherwise brilliant season by the ACC runner ups.

The game will be played in Tallahassee, which could potentially even make FSU the favorite, but there's no way the No. 1 ranked team in the nation falls by mid-September.

Prediction: Oklahoma 31, Florida State 17

No. 4: LSU Tigers

2 of 5

The Tigers were on pace for an undefeated season in 2010 before losing a heartbreaker to rival Auburn in late-October.

LSU finished up 10-2 in the regular season, earning a berth in the AT&T Cotton Bowl, which they won easily over Texas A&M, 41-24.

This year though, the Tigers will stumble early, as they play the national championship runner-up, Oregon Ducks, to open the season.

Oregon is ranked No. 3 in the nation in the preseason coaches poll, and they bring back the same quarterback and running back combo that was so successful in 2010.

LaMichael James and Darron Thomas will be the difference for the Ducks in this Week 1 matchup.

Prediction: Oregon 28, LSU 24

No. 3: Oregon Ducks

3 of 5

Oregon will start off the 2011 season much like they began it in 2010, piling up wins and putting their name into the national title contender hat.

The Ducks open up with LSU in Week 1, and then head into a tough conference schedule which features a dangerous road game against Stanford.

The Cardinal nearly toppled the Ducks last season before a furious second half comeback saved Oregon's undefeated regular season.

However this time around, Andrew Luck and Stanford finish the job at home, ending Oregon's hopes of a perfect season and another shot at the national championship.

Prediction: Stanford 42, Oregon 31

No. 2: Alabama Crimson Tide

4 of 5

Alabama failed to defend its 2009 national championship last season, losing a total of three games before trouncing Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl.

The season was considered by many to be a disappointment after the Crimson Tide blew a huge lead at home to rival Auburn, losing the game by one point, 28-27.

Alabama will face a tough test early in 2011, when they visit Penn State in Happy Valley, but they should survive that game as well as their non-conference schedule.

However when the Tide's SEC schedule kicks in during Week 4, they could be in trouble.

Alabama will host Arkansas that week, in what will be their first loss of the season.

The Razorbacks are the fourth highest ranked SEC team heading into the season, and they will have the best shot at upsetting an Alabama team looking ahead to a matchup at Florida the next week.

Prediction: Arkansas 24, Alabama 20

No. 1: Oklahoma Sooners

5 of 5

The 2010 Big 12 champions will be the most wanted team in college football this season as they carry the nation's top ranking into the new year.

The Sooners put the finishing touches on a 12-2 season in 2010 with a rout of the UConn Huskies in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Two road losses to Big 12 foes where the only low points for Oklahoma a year ago, but this season will provide some new struggles.

Unfortunately for Sooners fans, it will come in early-December, the last game of the regular season, against rival Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma State nearly knocked off the Sooners a season ago, losing a shoot out, 47-41, on their home field.

The No. 8 ranked Cowboys will be at home again this time around and will have the benefit of the crowd and underdog status.

Prediction: Oklahoma State 38, Oklahoma 34
