Another One Bites The Dust: Iowa Hawkeyes Send No. 3 Penn State Packing

Sayre BedingerNov 8, 2008

IOWA CITY, Iowa: Are these guys for real?  Iowa (6-4, 3-3) scored a major upset victory over the previously undefeated Penn State Nittany Lions (9-1, 5-1) and all but guaranteed themselves a bowl game appearance.

While Iowa basks in all the glory, Penn State is left to hang their heads and wonder how they let it slip away. This loss to Iowa slams the door on their hopes to earn a National Championship appearance.

Iowa kicker Daniel Murray nailed a 31-yard field goal to win the game with one second remaining on the game clock.  That field goal was set up by Iowa's staggering 17th interception of the year, by safety Tyler Sash.

Penn State controlled the ball early, but Iowa's defense got stingier as the Lions got closer to the end zone, and that proved to be the difference.

Derrick Williams played very well, lining up for the Nittany Lions at running back, quarterback, and his listed position, wide receiver.  He gave Penn State a nine-point lead heading into the fourth quarter via a rushing touchdown on a "quarterback" keeper.

Both teams used the ground game as their major offensive weapon, and Heisman hopeful running back Shonn Greene did not disappoint.

On 28 carries, Greene ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns against the best run defense the Hawkeyes have faced all season long.  He also ran for 100 yards in his 10th straight game, most in the FBS.

Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi turned the ball over twice, but he stepped it up on the final drive of the game and drove his team down the field for a game-winning field goal, converting on three third-down pass plays.

Iowa now looks to the visiting Purdue Boilermakers, who will visit Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City next Saturday.  Purdue will face its second Heisman hopeful in as many weeks, just having been beaten earlier today by Javon Ringer and Michigan State.
