Preseason College Football Rankings 2011: Who Got Screwed in USA Today Top 25?
It's finally here.
The USA Today Coaches Poll was released today, and of course, some teams just flat got no respect.
The conference break-down looks like this:
SEC: Eight
Big Ten: Five
Big 12: Five
Mountain West: Two
Pac-12: Two
ACC: Two
Independents: One
Big East: Zero
With practices starting this week and everyone zeroing in on the first game of the season, things are really starting to get busy in the college football universe.
While many of the teams checked into the poll in a position with which no one would argue, let's take a few minutes and run down the teams that got ripped off.
Feel free to chime in.
Take a look at the poll in all its glorious entirety, here.
10. Air Force Falcons
1 of 10The Falcons were left out of the Top 25.
The problem with that is the entire bottom of the poll is a farce.
Texas and Florida are not going to be much better than last season, Georgia is a pretender and if anyone from the Big Ten should sneak in at the bottom, it should be Iowa or Northwestern, not PSU.
The Falcons are easily better than Florida or Texas, especially since they now have a threat to throw the ball in QB Tim Jefferson.
9. Arkansas Razorbacks
2 of 10The Razorbacks check into the poll at No. 14, immediately behind Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Nebraska and Wisconsin.
By season's end, the Razorbacks will be ahead of all of them, except maybe Wisconsin, in the polls.
Tyler Wilson has shown that he can make plays, and with the powerful running game and talented wide receivers Arkansas can throw onto the field, he has plenty of help.
Defensively, the Razorbacks went from 89th to 36th in total defense last season, and with the returning talent, there is no reason to expect them not to make another leap.
The Hogs will surprise either Alabama or LSU with an upset and should be in the Top 10 in place of Boise State, Stanford or Oklahoma State.
8. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
3 of 10Apparently the coaches aren't buying into all the hype just yet.
Probably with good reason, as the Irish seem to be annually overrated.
However, 2011 will prove to be the season that the Irish finally finish near the top of the rankings once again.
With playmakers like Manti Te'o and Prince Shembo on defense and Cierro Wood and Michael Floyd on offense, this is one scary team.
Starting at No. 18, below teams like Ohio State and Michigan State is just not right for the Irish.
7. Florida State Seminoles
4 of 10OK, so most teams wouldn't complain about a Top-Five ranking (No. 5), but the 'Noles have reason too.
E.J. Manuel takes over at quarterback and leads an extremely capable and experienced offensive unit, and the huge recruiting successes FSU has enjoyed over the past four years or so are going to pay off on defense.
Even if you still aren't buying the 'Noles, They should not be behind an Oregon team that lost five total offensive linemen from the rotation or even Alabama and their inexperienced skill players on offense.
6. South Florida Bulls
5 of 10The first of two Big East teams to get shafted, the Bulls boast one of the most talented quarterbacks in the conference.
B.J. Daniels has a penchant for making mistakes, but with the progress he made in the offseason, it's very likely we see those interception numbers go down.
USF should have snuck into the bottom of the rankings, ahead of at least Penn State, Florida and Texas.
5. Virginia Tech Hokies
6 of 10Yes Tyrod Taylor, Darren Evans and Ryan Williams are all gone, but their replacements are nothing to sneeze at.
Logan Thomas has five inches on Taylor and will have the ability to see the middle of the field that was Tyrod's glaring weakness.
Wilson is explosive and will be close to matching the productivity of last season's run game.
While the Hokies are No. 13 today, expect the team that won 11 games last season to sneak into the Top 10 before long.
4. Iowa Hawkeyes
7 of 10The Hawkeyes are not ranked and as already mentioned, easily should have snuck in ahead of Penn State, Florida or Texas.
James Vandenberg is a more than serviceable replacement for the departed Ricky Stanzi, and Marcus Coker had his coming out party in the Insight Bowl against Mizzou.
While they are not generating very much buzz in the new look Big Ten, the Hawkeyes are quietly sneaking under the radar, and given their recent history, they won't be for long.
3. Missouri Tigers
8 of 10Tyler Gabbert transferred, so what?
James Franklin is more than capable of leading this team.
The reason they appear on this list is, while they are No. 21 in the poll, they are just behind Mississippi State and Auburn.
Talk about a joke.
By the end of the season, neither of those teams will be ranked, and Missouri will be at least Top 15.
2. Arizona State Sun Devils
9 of 10Really, the Devils don't deserve a ranking?
Sure they were only 6-6 last season, but three of those losses were to Top-10 teams, and five of them were by a combined total of 18 points.
While they may not be Top-10 material, they certainly deserved to at least be ranked.
1. West Virginia Mountaineers
10 of 10The second of our Big East teams, the Mountaineers have suffered through a turbulent offseason.
However, for them not to be ranked is a travesty.
WVU has a guy who will turn into a legit Heisman candidate at quarterback and a wizard at head coach in Dana Hogorsen.
This is the same team that gave LSU all they could handle in Baton Rouge last season and the favorite to take the Big East title.
While the conference has been a joke in recent years, this is a major slight to the 'Neers.
