Premier League Transfers: 5 Biggest Steals of the 2011 Summer Transfer Window

Shawn EAug 4, 2011

In a transfer window that has seen Liverpool splash out £40 million on Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson, some teams have found ways to ink players for far less capital.

Overpaying for talent can have drastic consequences; just look at the situation at Chelsea after spending £50 million on Spanish international Fernando Torres.

The London-based club has yet to make any signature signings in the summer transfer window thus far. Let's take a look at the five players who are more than worth their transfer fees.

Gervinho

1 of 5

Arsenal added the talented Ivory Coast forward for just £10.5 million from French champions Lille on July 12. Last season Gervinho scored 18 goals and provided 10 assists in 53 appearances in all competition.

In his Arsenal debut versus FC Koln, he recorded the first brace of his Gunners career. Gervinho will prove to be and excellent signing for Arsene Wenger. His pace and dribbling ability are surely to cause havoc amongst Premier League defenses in 2011-12.

Liverpool may just regret spending around £20 million on Stewart Downing when they could have had a better player for a 50 percent discount.

Joel Campbell

2 of 5

After watching Campbell this summer in the Gold Cup and Copa América, I was shocked to hear that the 19-year-old Costa Rican international was sold for only £930,000.

Campbell is great on the ball and posses break away speed. His creativity, which allows him to make diagonal runs and play diagonal through passes, make him an ideal fit at Arsenal.

Demba Ba

3 of 5

Demba Ba heading to Newcastle United from relegated West Ham on free transfer is arguably the best steal of the summer.

Ba transferred to West Ham in last seasons January transfer from German club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

The Senegalese international got off to a flying start for the Hammers. He ended the season with an impressive seven goals in 13 appearances.

In spite of his efforts, the Hammers were relegated to the Championship, leading Ba to reject West Ham United's £50,000-a-week deal.

Oriol Romeu

4 of 5

Romeu's transferred from La Liga's champions Barcelona to Stamford Bridge this summer for a fee of €5 million.

However, the deal also includes €10m and €15m buy-back clauses that could send the holding midfielder back to Camp Nou.

With defensive midfielder Michael Essien set to miss a significant portion of the 2011-12 season due to injury, Romeu is likely to receive significant playing time. Romeu made two appearances for the Catalan conquerors last season after spending the past two years with Barcelona B.

Souleymane Coulibaly

5 of 5

After impressive performances in the U-17 World Cup in Mexico, Coulibaly was signed by Harry Redknapp for a reported fee of €1.7 million from Italian club Siena.

Since scoring an impressive nine goals in four games for the Ivory Coast in the U-17 World Cup, Coulibaly has been receiving praise as "The Next Didier Drogba."

If Coulibaly reaches his full potential, €1.7 million may prove to be one of the best bargains of all time.
