Grading the Oakland Raiders' Offseason Moves so Far
The Raiders haven't been the most active team in this post-lockout NFL season, but they have made a few quality moves to shore up deficiencies.
Zach Miller and Nnamdi Asomugha have already departed, and if I was graded those "moves" or lack there of they wouldn't both be F's. Miller would, but Asomugha would be in the B range, because he was too expensive to keep.
I've focused on five signings or re-signings the Raiders have made over the past few weeks.
Re-Signing S Michael Huff
1 of 5Big move by the Raiders, especially since they already let Asomugha walk.
Huff had a good 2010 season and finally played up to his talent level. That was his first season where he justified his first round selection back in 2006.
Huff will need to have a big impact in the passing defense in 2011.
Grade: B+
Signing QB Trent Edwards
2 of 5As long as Edwards doesn't play, I'm fine with the move.
There's really nothing worse than paying a rookie with no experience to back up a starter. Might as well have a guy with a bit of experience on the bench just in case.
Now, I think Edwards is pretty terrible, though the Bills never really helped him out. Edwards is a career backup and as long as that is the only role he fills for the Raiders the signing is okay.
Grade: C
Re-Signing LB Kamerion Wimbley
3 of 5Kamerion Wimbley's been through the gauntlet when it comes to contracts this last season.
His initial contract called for a raise to around four million. After that was found to be illegal, the Raiders franchise tagged him raising his salary to $11.3 million
Most recently the Raiders gave him a five-year, $48 million contract with $29 million guaranteed. This not only locks up one of the Raiders best linebackers long term, but also makes Wimbley one of the highest paid players at his position in the league.
Necessary move for the Raiders, keeping the defense strong. Dollar amounts are kinda high, but saved cap room for this season.
Grade: A-
Re-Signing C Samson Satele
4 of 5The Raiders have had so much trouble with offensive linemen over the past few seasons it was smart to keep Satele. He's a solid player who could play multiple positions on the line.
The Raiders needed to let Gallery go, and keeping Satele gives the Raiders some depth on the offensive line.
Grade: B-
Signing TE Kevin Boss
5 of 5The Raiders made their best move in a hurry.
After seeing Zach Miller slip away, the Raiders were great to get Kevin Boss immediately. He's affordable at four years for $16 million. He's a solid professional that could put up big numbers this season.
The Raiders had no depth behind Miller and to assume they would okay without a replacement , would have been foolish.
Kevin Boss might not be as good as Zach Miller, but signing him was a most necessary move for the Raiders to make.
