Florida State Football Recruiting: Jameis Winston Commits, What It Means for FSU
The nation's top QB prospect has made his college decision, and it was a shocker to some. Jameis Winston, from Hueytown, Alabama, has committed to Florida State over LSU and in-state Alabama.
What does this mean for FSU's recruiting efforts? What happens to Alabama and LSU now? Come inside to check it all out.
Here we go.
Who Is Jameis Winston?
1 of 3Winston is a 6'4", 190-pound QB from Alabama who is also one of the top 25 baseball players in the country. He's a dual-threat type with an elite skill set.
But don't let the dual-threat label walk you into the thought that Winston is a running QB. It just means this kid can take off if he doesn't feel like picking you apart from the pocket.
Winston has good arm strength, solid accuracy, scans the field well and plays with good pocket presence. He's instinctive with the football, creative and makes plays.
He can also get upfield, shake and bake and make dazzling runs with his legs.
Who Were the Finalists?
2 of 3The finalists for Winston included LSU and Alabama. Personally, I thought Alabama had won out, and originally I had a feeling about Florida State. Just shows I should have stuck with my gut.
Alabama is the biggest loser here, as they let Jimbo Fisher and Dameyune Craig come into their territory and get one of the best players to come out of the state in years, and he's a QB too. The Tide also lost out on Gunner Kiel.
Plus, Winston has been a lifelong 'Bama fan. LSU strikes out for another elite QB prospect and could turn its focus to Greyson Lambert now.
What Does This Mean for Florida State?
3 of 3A lot. Seriously.
This is the 10th player to commit to FSU who is inside the ESPNU 150. Wow. This could indeed put the 'Noles in the driver's seat for the No.1 class in 2012.
Winston gives FSU an heir apparent to E.J. Manuel, and infuses the roster with a young, elite QB prospect. He could take FSU fans all the way back to the early 90s as a bigger Charlie Ward type, and should be more stable than Adrian McPherson was.
He also gives FSU more sheen and shine to other recruits considering coming to Tallahassee, while Winston will also become one of the best players on the Seminoles baseball team.
This is huge for Florida State and impacts two sports programs in Tallahassee.
