Chicago Cubs Boss Tom Ricketts Should Hire Pat Gillick

Bob WarjaJul 15, 2011

Pat Gillick, the longtime baseball executive, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame next weekend. He turns 74 next month. But he says he would consider becoming a club president again in the right situation.

That opens the door for Cubs owner, the clueless Tom Ricketts, to get a clue. And that clue could come in the form of a former GM who understands what it takes to build a winning organization.

Gillick has been the GM for four teams and guided the Toronto Blue Jays and the Philadelphia Phillies to World Series titles.

He has said that he is not interested in becoming a GM any longer, so bringing him in would not upset the apple cartโ€”not that I would mind that cart toppling over into a heap of Jim Hendry's remains.

Instead, he could provide valuable insight and guidance to the Ricketts family on how to build a winner while at the same time helping in a search for the replacement to Hendry.

The way things are now, who does Ricketts have to lean on, Crane Kenney? Talk about clueless as it pertains to baseball!

Meanwhile, Ricketts continues to back his current GM while his almost $140 million team languishes with the second-worst record in all of baseball.

Bringing in Gillick doesn't necessarily mean that Ricketts has to fire Kenney, though, again, that would certainly not bother me one bit.

Gillick would oversee baseball operations while Kenney could continue to do stadium-related stuff and whatever else it is that he is doing.

And yes, I know he's old. So what? The Marlins just hired an 80-year-old manager. From all accounts, Gillick is still energetic and of sound baseball mind.

Look, this probably won't happen. Remember this piece of the vote of confidence given to Hendry?

"I've never bought into the (idea) that I should have a baseball guy to watch my baseball guy and his baseball guys," Ricketts said. "Then what do you get? A baseball guy to watch the baseball guy who's watching your baseball guys?

Well, I agree with Ricketts on one point: No one should be subjected to watching this team. It's harmful to your health.
