Premier League All-Star Game: Could the Idea Actually Work?

Zaakir HoosenJun 7, 2018

Manchester United have touched down in the US for their preseason tour, which will kick off in Boston. as the United players look to prepare themselves for another blockbuster season in retaining the league title.

It seems, though, that central defender Rio Ferdinand has been in deep thought after seeing the delight and joy from fans and players alike in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Ferdinand has made suggestions via Twitter, suggesting the Premier League adopt a similar approach, replacing the Charity Shield with an All-Star match.

Certain ideas where thrown in the hat, as thousands of fans posted their ideas on Twitter. Some suggested a northern team vs a southern team, while Ferdinand also recommended an All-Star team versus the League Champions match.

So will the FA even consider such an idea? Looking at the financial benefits, it could be something to consider—the idea of an All-Star weekend, fans' interaction, massive television revenue and of course a sell-out crowd at possibly Wembley Stadium would be exactly what the FA needs.

Some critics feel a team made up of players not familiar with each other could play unfairly to the opposition, who play together week in and week out.

Fellow teammate Wayne Rooney suggested it would be unfair for such a match—in his joking sense—as most of the All-Stars would be from Manchester United.

So what's your view on an All-Star team? Looking across the league, choose your 11 who would battle the champions. (So for this exercise, United players would have to be excused.)
