Nebraska’s loss to OU: It is what it is…

Jeff WilliamsNov 2, 2008

First, HG tips its hat to Bob Stoops and his talented OU squad

We got our ass kicked by one of the best teams in the country at their home stadium.

What are you going to do about it?

There is no reason to get upset or angry about it.

We had this chalked up as a loss and know we all know what the ‘gap’ is between these two historic programs.

Husker Fan, there is no reason to let this game mess with your Husker MoJo. We aren’t competing against Oklahoma and we are a couple of years from giving the Oklahoma’s and Missouri’s of the world serious challenges on a  consistent basis.

There is no reason to complain about this coordinator or that play call or starting this player over another.

In the end, it probably wouldn’t of mattered at all. The bottom line: what worked and has been successful for Nebraska the past 3 games didn’t work against OU.

The key for the Cornhuskers now is making sure we take care of Kansas State and Colorado, two games against evenly matched opponents that we should be competitive in and win.

Kansas, on the other hand, obviously has more talent and a better squad, and a win against them would be the highlight of the season (and avenge the 76-39 loss last year).

Let’s take a look at HG’s expectations for the rest of the season:

3-0 to end the season would be fantastic.

2-1 to end the season would make this a successful season.

1-2 to end the season would be disappointing but would be a step forward from last season.

0-3 to end the season would be incredibly frustrating and negate a lot of progress this team would make.

Nothing can be taken for granted. There are no ‘easy’ wins at this part of the schedule.

Husker Fans, we need to understand this and not get discouraged by the loss to OU. OU is a superior team from special teams to defense.

There aren’t to many Huskers who could start of OU

Bo Pelini and the rest of the Cornhuskers coaching staff need to recover much like they recovered from 3 straight losses (one blowout and two heart-breakers).

Finally, there is something to be said about Bo Pelini coming in and achieving some success, but also getting his ass handed to him by better teams and more seasoned coaches. I don’t want Bo Pelini to achieve success easily. I want him to figure out how to beat teams with more talent than us, while recruiting hard to get more talented Huskers.

The gap is wide and we have a long way to go, but we’ve already seen too much progress this season to get discouraged over an ass-kicking from one of the best teams (and coaches) in the land.
